Product Description

BBC Music Magazine

The names Parry and Stanford used to be paired as a matter of routine - as pioneers of the English musical renaissance, forerunners of Elgar. But the two works recorded here are very different in style and spirit. Granted we're talking about the younger, Victorian Parry and the mature, Edwardian Stanford; but, interestingly, it's the Stanford which on the whole sounds less original, more Brahmsian, despite the striking Celtic Twilight visions in the slow movement. Parry may have thought of his Nonet as a study, but there are moments when one senses the thrill of discovery. The performances are clean and contained, but also affectionate, with recordings fresh and sensitively balanced.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful music-making, 30 Aug 2009
By Guy Whit (London, UK) - See all my reviews
Two utterly delightful chamber works from two really underrated British composers. Both works are richly mellifluous and melodically inspired, with a drowsy warmth in the slow movements and a jaunty swagger in the faster sections. The combination of winds and strings is wonderfully fresh and expertly handled. Played superbly and recorded with great clarity and naturalness, this disc is a real winner. I keep going on about how composers such as these are shamefully neglected. Listen to this and I'm sure you'll see why, if you're interested.
