5.0 out of 5 stars Before and After KING KONG, 20 Mar 2001

(REAL NAME)
I'm a Max Steiner fanatic and have always wondered why so few of his scores are available. Certainly you can buy suites and overtures from many sources and conductors like Gerhard and Mauceri; they've done much for his case. Secondly there's enough choice to be had if I mention Steiner's best known scores like Gone With the Wind.

But after Marco Polo started collaboration with the great Stromberg/Morgan/Moscow SO team we're going to be spoiled. After Virginia City, King Kong, They Died With Their Boots On, Treasure of the Sierra Madre there's now the prequel to King Kong: Dangerous Game and its sequel: Son of Kong. Here you'll find Steiner in his wildest moments, everything played, recorded as if you are there alive.

Morgan et.al. present these scores as Max must have meant them to be, that is they've recorded them with a proper string section and all the woodwinds etc. that were intended but cut from the original production because of budget reasons. Listen to the Chase scenes in Dangerous Game and you'll know what I mean.

Much more could be recorded from Steiner's pre WWII period, but there're other scores, which cry for attention too. Like The Fountainhead. All in all I hope this team will have carte blanche from Mr. Heymann for the next 100 years.
