Synopsis

Eddie Murphy follows up his hot streak of BEVERLY HILLS COP and TRADING PLACES with this mystical action-comedy directed by Michael Ritchie. Murphy plays Chandler "Chan" Jarrell, a man who tracks down lost children for a living. When the beautiful Kee Nang (Charlotte Lewis), a Tibetan priestess, approaches him with the flattering yet disarming declaration that he is "the chosen one," his quest for the illustrious golden child (J. L. Reate) begins. Along the way, Chan uncovers secrets within Chinatown's underbelly and encounters a seemingly endless parade of bizarre and dangerous situations, most often spearheaded by Sardo Numpsa (Charles Dance), the devil's main henchman. It's up to Chan to locate the golden child, then protect him from the evil Sardo, who won't rest until he sees to it that the boy is in his clutches.
Not surprisingly, THE GOLDEN CHILD is a comedian's showcase. As Murphy ad-libs his way to the rescue, it appears that Ritchie allowed him the comfort of improvisation throughout the film's production, and that trust in his star pays off. The result is a laugh-out-loud crowd pleaser with a heavy dose of action that alludes to the mystical Asian dramas of the past.

5.0 out of 5 stars Eddie Murphy at his best!, 30 Dec 2003
One great comedy indeed! Eddie Murphy is hilarious as usual, when he plays Chandler Jarrel (or "Yarrell"), Charles Dance is perfect as Sardo Numspa (or "Brother Numsy") ;-) , the girl is beautiful and even the Tibetanian kid who plays the Golden Child does a great job.

If you're looking for a great laugh combined with a touch of magic and fairy tale, as well as an exciting thriller, then this is the film you're looking for! As a bonus the film takes you on a trip to Nepal which isn't something you see every day.

Eddie Murphy's done a whole bunch of awesome comedies, and this is definitely one of them!

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor, 13 April 2004
By A. Macfarlane (Edinburgh, Scotland) - See all my reviews

Murphy sleepwalks his way through this one, re-hashing the "crazy black guy" routine that worked so well in earlier films (Trading Places in particular). Its a pretty ridiculous plot, but then you don't tend to watch Murphy for gritty realism. It did really annoy however that they chose to set the Tibetan section of the movie in *ahem* Kathmandu, or the way the plot flits from one ethic reference to another as if they are interchangeable. Charlotte Lewis is exotic and beautiful - which pretty much describes her role in every film she's ever made - but nothing else. There are a variety of 'colourful' villains, who get involved in dull, dull, dull action sequences. And the film finishes with a piece of stop-motion animation that seemed dated even when this film came out in 1986. This really is action comedy by numbers.
