Product Description

A streetwise misfit struggles to realize his dream of becoming a Naval Aviation Officer. The winner of 2 Academy Awards including B est Supporting Actor.

From Amazon.co.uk

Richard Gere plays an enrollee at a Naval officers candidate school and Debra Winger is the woman who wants him. That's pretty much it, story-wise, in this romantic drama, which is more effective in a moment-to-moment, scene-by-scene way, where the two stars and Oscar-winner Louis Gossett Jr.--as Gere's tough-as-nails drill instructor--are fun to watch. Sexy, syrupy, with occasional pitches of high drama (Gere having a near-breakdown during training is pretty strong), An Officer and a Gentleman proves to be a no-brainer date movie. --Tom Keogh --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

this is a story of the brutal regime of military training, coupled with
friendship, tragedy and love story........a genuine classic from '1982'
a young 'Richard Gere' plays naval officer trainee 'Zack Mayo' who had
been brought ( dragged ) up from a young age after his mothers death by
previously absent father 'Byron' a drunken 'hoar' chaser.
'Zack' wants to build himself a future as a naval pilot.
the sergeant 'Emil Foley' in charge of the recruits training program
which proves to be intense to say the very least, seems to have singled
out 'Zack' as a problem.
the local girls in the hope of a brighter future target the new trainee's
soon after they arrive at the training centre.
'Paula' has taken a shine to the young trainee 'Zack' however, he's a
loner who doesn't want a long term commitment.
a really pleasant look back at an old favourite.
again.....the upgrade to Blu-ray should have been given greater quality
attention by the distribution film company.
( better than 'dvd' but well short of 'HD' excellence.

This was on tv the other day and I fell asleep close to the end (because I was knackered and NOT because I was bored). Had to buy the DVD to see the end as this is an epic film which I have seen over and over and still want to see again.

As a kid of only ten when this movie was first released I was more interested in Star Wars than anything of a military/love nature. I therefore didn't watch this movie until I was in my early twenties & having recently watched this again on DVD I have to say how the whole "chick-flick" reputation that this film has is grossly mis-leading.

Superbly written & directed with an outstanding cast all playing the performances of their lives, it's hard not to be touched by this movie. Gere is perfect in the lead role, Winger stands head-and-shoulders above other actresses in similar roles around this period & Louis Gossett Jnr deservedly won as Oscar for his part. Although the movie's title track "Up Where We Belong" is instantly recognisable it's the use of the instrumental theme of this that really adds to the movie.

To say that Top Gun leaned heavily on "Officer" would be a huge understatement and whilst Top Gun is a good movie & understandably has an army of fans, it pales into insignificance compared to the "original".

If you haven't seen "Officer" it's a must-see .If you have, watch it again & look beyond it's chick-flick label and see for yourself quite what a brilliant movie it really is.

Richard Gere owned this genre Yanks, An Officer and A Gentleman and finnish with Pretty Woman what can you say all three different but brilliant and this to me the pick of the three. who can forget the walk through the factory at the end it is one of those hollywood moments. I like one reviewer didnt like this at first because we were 10 years old we were into star wars and indiana jones but when you see this again after decades you relise wow that was a great movie. Yes i knew about the walk through the factory with up where we belong blasting out. but now i think this is great film and debra winger she is beautiful.

This has always been one of my favourite films of it's type, and, in my opinion, films like Top Gun 'borrowed' a lot of material from Officer and a Gentleman. It's a great story, a great romance and really uplifting. But, there are many reviews of the films on the 'net so I won't bore you with my opinions of the film itself.

I like it enough to upgrade to blu-ray and that's what I want to talk about.

First the good: the film looks amazing. It's not perfect, but I didn't expect it to be. For a film it's age it looks incredible and the remastering has done an excellent job of retaining the original look of the film while cleaning it and upgrading it. I couldn't be more pleased with the blu-ray - especially when compared to my DVD version!
The sound is also a brilliant upgrade. This film has never been audibly impressive; but it's still really great to hear everything in hi-def sound!

Available audio and subtitles:
Audio: English 5.1 DTS HD-Master. German, Spanish, Spanish (Latin America), French, Italian and Portuguese MONO.
Subtitles: English, English HoH, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish and Swedish.

Ok...onto the BAD. Well, really there's only one. No extras. Nothing. Zip. Personally, this isn't that big a deal for me but does reduce my rating. I would have liked to have seen a Making Of or a retrospective on the film. I know the US blu-ray includes a Commentary, 4 Featurettes (including that retrospective I would've liked!) and a Trailer - and, apparently, it will play in the UK. But, it is more expensive.

So, if you don't care about the extras then buy the UK version.

This fil is about Richard Gere as a trainee Naval officer and the love interest is Debra Winger a 'local' lady who goes after such officers. It's a romantic drama and Gere is good as always in this role. The star performer is however the Drill Sargeant, the opening scene where he shouts in the faces of candidates has been copied (even word for word) in films like 'Full Metal Jacket' and a poor attempt in 'Private Benjamin'...'Only two things that come out of Texas boy....'!! If you like good films this will be a fantastic addition to your collection.
