Amazon.co.uk Review

Richard Gere plays an enrollee at a Naval officers candidate school and Debra Winger is the woman who wants him. That's pretty much it, story-wise, in this romantic drama, which is more effective in a moment-to-moment, scene-by-scene way, where the two stars and Oscar-winner Louis Gossett Jr.--as Gere's tough-as-nails drill instructor--are fun to watch. Sexy, syrupy, with occasional pitches of high drama (Gere having a near-breakdown during training is pretty strong), An Officer and a Gentleman proves to be a no-brainer date movie. --Tom Keogh

5.0 out of 5 stars Brillliant writing, 8 Jun 2009
By Jonathan Carr "joncarr" (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
For me the reason this movie works so well is that it is about the two central themes of work and love. The audience relates to the question of whether Richard Gere's character will ever be a worthwhile naval officer. We also relate to the question of whether he will ever find someone to love him or be able to love anyone else. It sounds so easy when put like that to imagine writing or creating a story about these themes but the truth is that most stories shortchange us when they deal with such serious themes. Everyone seeks the social status of a good job and everyone seeks to be loved in a nurturing relationship, yet so few people manage to achieve both. The vast majority of people are somewhere in the middle of achieving these goals and as we know from modern life a lot of people never get there. The interesting question is why so few people truly fulfill what are quite ordinary goals.

There is an honesty and truthfulness about this project which makes it timeless and lifts it above most Hollywood product. On the DVD commentary Taylor Hackford (who is married to Helen Mirren) discusses how Hollywood had a great atmosphere in the early 80s when this movie was made which vanished as the decade wore on and has never been recovered. I can think of few films which are this real with the audience and which are so blunt in their presentation of a suicide caused by being deceived in love, a complex love-hate relationship between the sergeant and Zach Mayo, and the fear of commitment so effectively portrayed by Debra Winger and Richard Gere.

There is no denying that the good looks and fit physiques of Richard Gere and Debra Winger make this movie easy on the eye but there is much more here - a genuine grasp of human nature and how with a bit of determination and honesty we can have life's prizes - love and worthwhile work. But if we try to deceive people and refuse to love people for who they really are, we are making a mockery of our lives and we will never be either an officer, nor a gentleman. This might sound a bit odd but I believe this movie displays as profound a comprehension of what humans really want and how they try to obtain it as Jane Austen's novels do.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Only two things that come out of Texas boy...!", 12 Jan 2004
This fil is about Richard Gere as a trainee Naval officer and the love interest is Debra Winger a 'local' lady who goes after such officers. It's a romantic drama and Gere is good as always in this role. The star performer is however the Drill Sargeant, the opening scene where he shouts in the faces of candidates has been copied (even word for word) in films like 'Full Metal Jacket' and a poor attempt in 'Private Benjamin'...'Only two things that come out of Texas boy....'!! If you like good films this will be a fantastic addition to your collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great one to own..., 18 Dec 2000
By A Customer
Released in 1982, this movie has become a modern classic. Richard Gere shot to superstardom as Zach Mao in this love story based upon the plight of a trainee naval officer. Mao decides to shake off his wild and delinquent past and follow his dream by signing on to fly jets for the US Navy. Unfortunately his drill sergent has other plans and tries almost everything to ensure his failure. As Mao's endurance is pushed to the very limit, a romantic liason with a local girl only proves to complicate his struggle more.

This is a superb, memorable movie. Lou Gossett Jnr won an oscar for his supporting role as the tough drill sergent, and Debra Winger is excellent as Mao's girlfriend Paula. David Keith also pulls off a convincing performance as Mao's fellow recruit and best friend. With a great storyline, gripping action and a classic ending, it is no wonder that the movie was as successful as it was. If you still have'nt seen this, you should make it a priority.

This coming-of-character drama was that rare thing, both a fantastic movie & a smash hit. Brilliantly made & performed, the screenplay's apparently taught in American film schools.
