Amazon.co.uk Review

Star Trek V left us nowhere to go but up, and with the return of Wrath of Khan director Nicholas Meyer, this sixth instalment restored the movie series to its classic blend of space opera, intelligent plotting and engaging interaction of stalwart heroes and menacing villains. Borrowing its subtitle (and several lines of dialogue) from Shakespeare, the movie finds Admiral Kirk (William Shatner) and his fellow Enterprise crew members on a diplomatic mission to negotiate peace with the revered Klingon Chancellor Gorkon (David Warner). When the high-ranking Klingon and several officers are ruthlessly murdered, blame is placed on Kirk and crew. The subsequent investigation, which sees Spock taking on the mantle of Sherlock Holmes, uncovers an assassination plot masterminded by the nefarious Klingon General Chang (Christopher Plummer) in an effort to disrupt a historic peace summit. As this political plot unfolds, Star Trek VI takes on a sharp-edged tone, with Kirk and Spock confronting their opposing views of diplomacy and testing their bonds of loyalty when a Vulcan officer is revealed to be a traitor. With a dramatic depth befitting what was to be the final movie mission of the original Enterprise crew, this film took the veteran cast out in respectably high style, with the torch being passed to the crew of Star Trek: The Next Generation in the following movie, Star Trek: Generations. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com

5.0 out of 5 stars How Star Trek Should Be, 21 Feb 2003
By "gmgjkfjkg" - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
This film is great classic Star Trek. It is the last film to star the original Star Trek crew, and boy they go out with a bang. This is the best Star Trek film since Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan. This is not surprising as this film has the same director. Kirk and the rest of the Enterprises crew may be looking a bit old but they can still pull their punches. The story line is the best type there is in Star Trek. Without spoiling the plot, Kirk is put into a no win situation and the rest of the film is Kirk and the Enterprises crew desperately attempting to win from this no win situation. Naturally they do win, but the film is nerve wracking until the last possible moment. An excellent film for the Classic Star Trek crew to bow out with and a must see film for any Star Trek fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Film, no real extras, 17 Jun 2001
This has to be the best "first generation" Star Trek movie. The crew are beginning to look their age but the fast pace supplied by Nicolas Meyer directing means they have to leave their zimmers in the wardrobe. The soundtrack is also one of the best I've heard on a Star Trek movie both musically and also the excellant sound effects in Dolby Digital. All this said again we see poor provision of extras by Paramount. A few trailers are all we get for the DVD premium price. And althought the picture has great colour statuation and is very sharp the disc is not anamorphic to give it that ultimate edge ... Still it'\
s the movie that counts and this is a Sci-Fi classic.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great movie, lousy DVD, 19 Jan 2002
By A Customer
Star Trek 6 is in my opinion one of the best of the series. Of course this DVD changes nothing about that.
However I wish I could say the same about the DVD. Forget the fact that there are hardly any extras. What's really bad is that the DVD is not anamorphic. The picture is presented in 4:3 letterbox format even on a 16:9 set, and if you blow that up to fix the 16:9 screen the subtitles (in another language, or English subs for the Klingon sequences) fall off the screen.
If I'd known they were going to do all DVDs like they did the TMP director's cut, with new (anamorphic) transfers, I would not have bought it.
