A French dramatic thriller that twists and turns with style and grace, In All Innocence is a refreshingly different piece of filmmaking. Virginie Ledoyen (The Beach) plays Cecile, an apparently innocent young girl trying to make her way in Paris. A series of events brings her in contact, and leads to an affair with rich lawyer Michel (Gérard Lanvin, a French Gabriel Byrne if ever there was one). Events soon spiral out of control, with Cecile at the centre of the whirlwind. Ledoyen pouts her way though the film to great effect, combining the little girl lost with the scheming femme fatale who wreaks havoc on all those whose lives she enters, including Michel and her psychotic ex-boyfriend Vincent (Guillaume Canet). Director Pierre Jolivet keeps the action taut and tense, making it near impossible to tear your eyes from the screen for fear of missing the next twist, and resists the temptation to offer up a clichéd happy ending, instead providing a perhaps more realistic denouement. --Phil Udell

Synopsis
Cecile and Samira rely on their wits to get the money to pay their expensive Paris rent by stealing wallets. One day Samira is arrested and in one of the stolen wallets is the name of a lawyer... French language with subtitles.

4.0 out of 5 stars French Cinema fails to disappoint yet again, 4 Dec 2003
Fundamentally, the story and interest of the entire film rests on Virginie Ledoyen as the central character. Her portrayal of a nieve, yet strong willed, young girl caught up in circumstances beyond her judgement and control is the underlying basis to the entire film.
Both her and the film are a success. Both charming and subtle, she makes the story attractive and accessible. The plot in itself is interesting in it's basic format, and the supporting cast performs adequately enough.
The direction is confident, but never flashy. It's not an intellectual centrepiece, but it's challenging themes of youth, identity, passion and responsibility will certainly give the familiar feelings of mental stimulation that modern french cinema often carries with it.
It's a jem, worth taking a look at for the central performances alone, and the refreshing, if not logical, ending.
