Thomas Hampson is the complete all-singing, all-dancing, all-purpose baritone who can put his voice to everything from Mozart to Menotti and sound right; so to call him a Verdian wouldn't be strictly accurate. His Verdi roles sit comfortably beside so many others. But he has the vocal qualities to be a "Verdi baritone" and here they are laid out and ready for inspection--on a glorious recital disc that can hold its place among any of the countless things released in 2001 for the composer's centenary year. You might find Hampson rather light of voice for some of the selection, but the lithe agility, security and definition in the singing more than compensates. The repertory ranges from lollipops like Germont's "Di Provenza" in La traviata to rarities from Giovanna d'Arco and Il corsaro. And the surprise on the disc is that the accompaniment comes from a period band, the Age of Enlightenment Orchestra, which doesn't normally venture this far into the 19th century. Whether Traviata benefits from period sound I'm not sure, but the playing is immaculate. --Michael White
