Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

One of the first RPGs available for the PS2, Evergrace tells the tale of two social outcasts who are mysteriously transported to another world and tasked with saving the place from evil.

A fairly typical Japanese RPG, this a colourful affair that tells its tale at a fairly sedate pace, mixing six parts storytelling to four parts combat to produce an entertaining if not entirely satisfying experience.

The Evergrace experience feels a little flat, it was originally a PSOne title that was moved over to the PS2 at a late stage, as the character and world detail fall a little short of the expectations of the average PS2 owner.

Wandering monsters are the order of the day, there sheer number overshadowing many of the set piece battles and although combat is relatively easy to get to grips with there are often too many encounters too close together to allow the story to breathe.

This gripe aside there's a lot about Evergrace that is appealing. The story, when it gets a look in, is engrossing and encourages the player to progress onwards.

Among the nicer touches are the ability to switch between the main characters at will and the high degree of customisation that's possible with weapons and outfits. Mixing coloured gems allows custom spells to be cast on swords (à la Final Fantasy) and for the fashion conscious RPGer clothing can be mixed and matched to suit--really tasteful combinations even prompt shopkeepers to give you a discount on purchases.

For those starting out on the PS2 RPG ladder there's a lot to be said for Evergrace, the more adventure-hardened may wish to look to the likes of Scion of Sorcery for an equally Japanese adventure with more action and bigger adversaries.--James Gordon

Manufacturer's Description

Evergrace is the first action RPG available for the PlayStation 2. It features many unique aspects that help to differentiate it from other action RPGs currently on the market. The story follows two different adventurers named Darius and Sharline whose paths frequently intertwine. The graphics are in full 3D, using the PlayStation 2's power to render thousands of polygons as well as load intricate textures to them. Evergrace also contains full voice acting, meaning that every word by every character is spoken aloud - a rarity among RPGs. In addition, the game even shows the different clothing and armor that each character wears, and allows the gamer to participate in a fashion show! Evergrace is an action RPG that is sure to feed any fan's hunger.

3.0 out of 5 stars Evergrace Review by ME, 21 Mar 2001
By A Customer
This game has great graphical qualities and I was astounded by the amount of gameplay there was aswell. You get to play as Darius. You guide him and his friend Sharline in a quest to expel the demons in this ethereal land. Could this be the game PS2 RPG fans have been waiting for....SADLY no it isn't,despite being a best selling game in Japan it isn't the best of games and it won't have much of an impact in our gaming industry! Surprisingly there is one good thing worthy to maybe think of buying this game is the combat system, the strengh of your attacks are determined by the analogue buttons and a handy menu feature allows you to define the force required to register a full impact attack. Furthermore there is a host of new weapons to acquire, with upgradable attributes for new combo attacks. The strangest thing about Evergrace is buying clothes that upgrade your palmila action of your weapon...But unfortunately you have to go around trapsing bad dudes to do this AND it takes forever!!! Darius is an unlucky man because he has a VERY strange birthmark on his hand which is an infamous brand of the crest, which means he is a relation to a member of them. I wreckon this is a worthy of a three star because it is saved by its battle system and i like the idea of buying clothes even though you have to trapse after bad guy after bad guy to get the money!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable game, 20 Aug 2003
By Kate (dorset United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
I have yet to finish this game, but it appears to be very big, there are plenty of actions and fights, the graphics aren't the best but neither the worst.

I'd buy it second hand as it's not really worth full price but what I'd call a good "filler-in" game whilst you're waiting for something good to be released.

A thousand words is a tad too much to write on this game, sorry.

4.0 out of 5 stars pretty good, 28 Feb 2005

This was the first ever game I played for the PS2. There are two main characters and you can choose to play as either of them. You go on a quest (different for each of the characters) and defeat monsters and solve puzzles on the way. I guess what makes this game different is the equipment and weapon customization, you can even change the colour! and when you equip something, you can actually see the character wearing it! The bad point though is that the game is unusually short for an RPG. Nevertheless, It's good fun despite it's age.
