This was their first 1970s album without the awesome Chris Thomas producing, and boy, can you tell. However, Lieber and Stoller (and Gary Brooker) don't make a bad job of a lighter bunch of songs than the previous two albums, Grand Hotel and Exotic Birds. They pushed for chart success rather than heavy pomp, and got it with the most unlikely single "Pandora's Box". Even as a fan I am still bewildered as to who bought this 45 for it to chart, but if it wasn't hyped, then it was a miracle. The irony (as Cmdr Brooker noted himself) was that the song was written (and originally recorded) in 1967...as were all their other hits: Whiter Shade Of Pale, Homburg and (in the USA) Conquistador (the live version released in 1972).

The rest of the album is made of some great little Procol songs, without being brilliant. Of the two covers, "I Keep Forgetting" is also cool, and in keeping with the rest of the album. However, the Beatles' "Eight Days A Week" is poor - like they they did it for their mums.

Procol fans can't complain about this one, but for new fans make sure you have Salty Dog, Live At Edmonton and Grand Hotel first.
