Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Gamers are in for a double dose of Horror, as the world of Clive Barker meets the first person shooter, in Clive Barker's Undying.

With the first-person shooter genre evolving into a powerful platform for narrative, scenario-based gameplay, more and more games are steering back to story-based games rather than merely being a vehicle for multiplayer action.

Using the Unreal Tournament engine, Clive Barker's Undying is set in Ireland around the 1920s, and sees you embody Patrick Galloway, summoned to the ancestral estate by the only surviving descendent, Jeremiah.

But all is not what it seems, with Jeremiah's siblings rising from the grave, set on slaying their brother to unleash a horrific curse, and release a flurry of hellacious creatures across the globe.

Naturally, it's up to Patrick to dismantle the curse. With his quest taking him through five otherworldly realms, populated with hordes of evil creatures, before returning to a final showdown at the estate.

The game features a unique two-handed weapon system. One hand juggles up to eight traditional hand weapons ranging from guns to dynamite. While the other hand is empowered with over a dozen spells that offer the most unique methods of returning creepy-crawly nasties to the netherworld.

Undying's development team secured the Unreal Tournament engine, which they have customised with very nice results. The richly rendered environments and detailed characters capture the dark, ominous spirit of Clive Barker's other narrative creations. Knowing the importance of a fully immersive game world, the team have smartly integrated layers of haunting, atmospheric sounds.

Hopefully, the combination of Clive Barker's storytelling and the Unreal Tournament Engine will produce a game that has haunting, action and overall great storytelling from the man of Horror himself. --Stuart Miles

Manufacturer's Description
Horror lovers, prepare yourselves - the first interactive game from the creatively twisted mind of horror master Clive Barker is on the way. Clive Barker's Undying is a first-person action horror game developed by DreamWorks Interactive and set to be published by Electronic Arts.Clive Barker's Undying is the story of Magnus, who is summoned to an estate in 1920s Ireland by Jeremiah, a guy with a serious problem. Jeremiah's four dead siblings are now undead and are intent on killing their last living brother. Magnus must embark on five quests to defeat each sibling as well as his own enemy, a man named Kiesinger, in order to achieve the ultimate goal of lifting the Curse of the Undying King that has set all this in motion. Players will journey through ten separate areas on their dangerous quest, such as Jeremiah's estate, a ruined monastery, the Pirate's Cove, the cursed city of Oneiros, and some Neolithic caves. The boss characters - the four siblings and Kiesinger - have their own environments loaded with monstrous creatures, including Di'nen, Howlers, Sleads, and the dreaded Hounds of Ghelziabahr. But Magnus will have eight weapons at his disposal to battle them with, ranging from the simple shotgun to the Scythe of Brennus. He'll also be able to cast up to 16 offensive and defensive spells, such as the Skull Storm, the Mindshatter, and a special spell called Scrye that lets players see and hear hidden events that provide clues to the game.

5.0 out of 5 stars Atmospheric and creepy, 22 Jan 2002
I bought this title when it was first released as both a first person shooter addict and a fan of Clive Barkers work in other mediums, I was blown away by how involving the game really is. The visuals have a really creepy and intense look and the monsters leap out from nowhere with blood curdling howls and shrieks which make your hair stand on end. The idea of having two different forms of attack (spells and the more traditional firepower) works really well, and I especially enjoyed the different techniques needed to dispatch the character bosses. The control system is very similar to most first person shooters and it plays very smoothly. I found the game to have just the right balance between the need to set difficult challenges and the need to tell a very good story with involving characters. The only small gripe I would have would be the player characters bad faux-Irish accent. I believed the game to be an excellent purchase at £30, so at £8.99p I would regard it as a must have. In summary, a good story with fast and frenetic gameplay.

5.0 out of 5 stars This plays fine on Vista!, 5 April 2008

Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
Excellent! My all-time favorite game works on Vista. I re-installed this on the offchance and was delighted that it still ran.

Ok, the graphics are no longer cutting edge. However, the story that unfolds is probably the best one I have come across in a game, ever. It oozes atmosphere, and the sound is truly spooky. If you don't get the willies coming into Lizbeth's lair then there is something wrong with you.

I've played this game through more times than I care to remember now. It still plays fresh. No other game (with the possible exception of the original Farcry) can say that. If you are having to use cheat codes then you are doing something wrong. The thing to remember is that "beasts" as opposed to human opponents, are far more susceptible to the cannon than ordinary weapons. However, the humans you have to kill are much more susciptible to ordinary weapons. So pick your weapon with care.

Also, don't use all the amplifiers as soon as you get them. I keep 4 handy until I get the shield, then I can max it up straight away. Do that and the game is much more manageable.

I could wax lyrical for days about this game. Just buy it, forgive the old graphics, and immerse yourself in a real corker.

5.0 out of 5 stars AAAAGGGGHHHHHH, 19 Jul 2001

(REAL NAME)
While not likely to match up to the giants of Half-life or Quake 3 in terms of 1st person shooter ratings, as a horror game alone it is the best you can buy. The Covenent Estate, a huge maze of dark corridors and spooky arcitecture, seems to live, (or at least be undead) thanks to the incredible assortment of creepy sounds included. The house seems to wail; although you tell yourself it is the wind outside, you know that isnt' true. The Howlers, a pack-hunting otherworldly dog, spread their horrifying howls for miles, signalling to you that they know where you are. Then there are the Covenent family members themselves. Although all except Jeremiah are supposedly dead, they will still make an appearence, each time catching you by surprise and making you jump. The portraits of them as they were alive will soon change into hideous visons of terror with a quick activation of your scye spell. The assortment of weapons is authentic of the time (1922); a six shot revolver, a double barrel shotgun (not pump action), and dynamite. AS you travel to the beautifully and terrifyingly modeled worlds such as Oreinos, you will find even more weapons of supernatural powers, such as the Tibertan War Cannon. Your spells come in no less of an assortment, ranging from the ability to Scrye(see events not visable to the naked eye) to raising firey skulls from the grave to fire at enemies with astonishing speed. THe enemies are all equally spooky; the Howlers, a pack hunting dog from hell, to a mysterious creature that simply slips out from underground, appearing in front of you. While the AI is not the most superb of any game, it is good enough to scare the living day lights out of you. Clive Barker's Undying is the pinnicle of horror games and will be looked up to by developers for generations. If you're looking for a scare, look no furthur than here.
