You take command of either the GDI or the NOD forces and battle to reach various military objectives and to push back the advancing enemy troops. You need to harvest Tiberian crop to fund your exploits, and your harvester and processing plant are among the most valuable possessions you will have in the game. Without money, no army can survive, so protecting and exploiting the Tiberian crop is a major tactical advantage.
As the game develops, so do the options in terms of building and resources. You will progressively be able to build more advanced weapons and defences, which will have a satisfyingly devastating effect on your opponents. Out of campaign mode, some of the best Command & Conquer battles are fought over a LAN or the Internet, where you can take your force to battle head-to-head with other gamers, in epic battles that can last for hours.
Overall the graphics were fantastic for their time, but by modern standards do look a little basic. Having said that, the quality of the graphics does not detract from the enjoyment of the game. The sound quality is also very good and original--even by modern standards.
Command & Conquer's success speaks for itself. This original game, plus the mission disc, still entertains despite being old. As C&C only requires 75MHz to run, it is suitable for even the older of machines. Those looking for something newer have the choice of Red Alert and Tiberian Sun, which use the same game basis, but more refined as the years have gone by. In summary, the Command & Conquer games are RTS--play them or sell your computer. --Chris Hall
