Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
The dark house and relentless pace of John Digweed's 1999 Hong Kong Global Underground mix was a shock to even electronic music's surreal, cannibalistic consciousness. Digweed has never been a glowstick-waving Goa-hippie by any means, but Hong Kong was a nuclear winter of subterranean rhythms, bouncing off the mouldy walls and testing once again techno's shaky, constantly evolving genre definitions. It had suddenly become crystal clear that Detroit-style industrialism has finally completely mind-melded with trance. So it's not surprising, then, that his latest, Los Angeles, continues along that same cold, brawny vein. You might suspect a Digweed recording from the City of Angles to be a glitzier affair, but L.A. has always had a sinister edge, that almost apocalyptic feeling that the whole city could crumble at any minute under the weight of broken dreams and loveless ambitions. Digweed latches onto that vibe right off on the first disc, spinning "Love In Traffic" from noted producer/DJ Satoshi Tomiie. In Digweed's hands, the track grinds itself against your ears with a detached, dirty passion, indulging in a slowly burning build. From there, he taps ever-deeper into the filthy heart of primal dance music, coalescing his mix around scrappy, metallic cross-rhythms, shadowy basslines and cruel, selfish beats. His work on the second disc is even sexier, as Digweed takes advantage of what's come before to flex his muscular ears, and turn up the juice on what was surely by now a sweaty mess of makeup, silicone and six-pack abs. It's almost vicious, the timing this man has in dropping down a needle on irresistible records like "The Fall" by Way Out West, but you have to accept his glorious brutality, gather up the sad remnants of your self-respect and make your way home in the soft morning light. Saturday night happens 52 times a year, after all. --Matthew Cooke

5.0 out of 5 stars (If you're a progressive fan), 26 Feb 2002
By A Customer
First of all, let's get one thing straight. I like progressive house, and am therefore biased towards this compilation. I take no responsibility for someone who does not like the scene buying (and MAYBE being dissapointed by) this offering, on the basis of this review.

Right, now onto the compilation itself: Deep, sometimes dark, pumping progressive house. The first 2 tracks seem to sum up the whole compilation: Pole Fodder & CP's "Apollo Vibes", laid back and somewhat uplifting, leads onto Satoshi Tomie's dark "Love in Traffic" (which boasts some of the strongest vocals in house music). And then its more of the same. John Digweed's choice of tracks mean that the highpoints really do standout: for instance, the strings of "Music" are enhanced by the strong basslines that appear throughout the whole album. And if your just listening to it at home, then when the mood picks up late in CD2, you actually feel the nodding of your head become more pronounced.

Special mention goes to Bedrock's remix of WOW's "The Fall", Cass and Slide's "Genesis" and the last couple of tracks.

John Digweed seems to have the knack of bringing the best out of deep progressive house and he used his midas touch while making this compilation. Oh yeah, and the mixing is exactly what is to be expected of Digweed. However, I suppose I was disappointed that more of Bedrock's own material did not appear on compilation (nor, indeed, anything else involving John Digweed). However, other than that the choice of music is perfect so it is not really a criticism.

So we have 3 cases for potential buyers:

1)If you really don't like this type of music, it is unlikely (by the very nature of the content) to make you change your mind. For this reason it could be a waste of money.
2)If you are interested and have an open mind: buy this as some of the best the scene has to offer.
3)If you are already into progressive house, then buy this compilation...YOU WILL LOVE IT!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad, 30 Aug 2004
There are some tracks that are excellent, but most don't leave any impression. i have tried to get into this whole compilation, but often find me just selecting about 3 tracks to play.
I preferred pappa's nu breed or nick warren in amsterdam to this compilation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well F**K Me, 12 Oct 2002
The moment this album starts it sends hard and tingling vibes down your spine. Tracks like 'Love in Traffic' and 'Mine to Give' just show how the american scene is new and exiting. CD2 is a lot darker and starts with the deep house sound of 'My Release'. Soothing your senses with 'The Fall' is just another way that Digweed tells you he is in control. The ride doesnt just simmer towards an endpoint, Digweed keeps it going right up until the finish with 'One' and 'The Energy'. If you liked Dave Seamon in Melboune then you will certainly enjoy this piece of musical brilliance.
