5.0 out of 5 stars The best film ever made (probably...), 17 Mar 2002
Three years after George Lucas blew the world of cinema wide open with Star Wars: A New Hope, he returned with the next installment in the saga: The Empire Strikes Back. A much darker film than its predecessor, Lucas takes his heroes and starts to rip them apart, with Vader hunting them down across most of the galaxy.

In the meantime, Luke Skywalker goes off to find a Jedi Master to train him, Han Solo and Princess Leia fall in love amidst the asteroids, and Threepio gets blown apart.

From the huge opening battle on Hoth, through to the devastating relevation at the end in Cloud City (look, we've all seen it, and we all know what happens, but just in case...!) this is a truly wonderful film.

Considering it was the second of a three part story, this film stands as the best thing George Lucas has done. With all the hype surrounding Episode II: Attack of the Clones, it's good to go back and see such a thrilling, romantic (in the best sense of the word) and stupefyingly good film!

Oh, and Boba Fett is in it too...!

5.0 out of 5 stars The best Star Wars film so far, 9 Feb 2003
By J. Maher (Rochdale , Lancs, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
The Empire Strikes Back is the best of the Star Wars films so far - we shall have to see if it is surpassed by Episode III.
Well the story so far from Star Wars.
The Empire has regrouped from its defeat and destruction of the Death Star and Grand Moth Tarkin. Darth Vader is now in complete control. The Rebel Alliance small and victorious against the odds is on the run trying to hide from the Empire on the Ice planet Hoth, until discovery by a Probe droid.
The film has fantastic battle scences that will stand the test of time from the battle of Hoth to the ultimately mind-blowing classic movie moment were Darth Vader annonces to Luke Skywalker that he is his father!! You thought of that back in 1980? I didn't. my mates and I argued for years over the implications of this timebomb!
Ultimately the succes of the film derives from the excellent screenplay that allowed the characters to develop, grow and to introduce new characters that have influnced the Star Wars Universe e.g. Yoda and Boba Fett who fit like hand in glove with the overall story. the film is richer and fuller with these contrasting characters in.

Probably why Empire doesn't score as highly as Star Wars on the all time greatest films is because of its darker, more bleaker look of the struggle between good and evil.
The film has to be seen in conjunction with the other two films in the trilogy to truly understand the Star Wars Universe.
Brillant work George!
