5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect musical comedy - with not a footlight in sight, 11 Feb 2002
By t.mcgee@ntlworld.com (Glasgow, Scotland) - See all my reviews
Betty Grable and Carole Landis play waitresses in a Texas diner, who decide to use a small inheritance to travel to the millionaire playground of Miami to find rich husbands. With their aunt (Charlotte Greenwood) they arrive at the resort and Grable catches "millionaire" Don Ameche, while Landis sets her sights on Bob Cummings. But which one is the real millionaire?
Sounds familiar? It should - the plot bacame the basis for the 1953 film "How To Marry a Millionaire."

But this 1941 film has the benefit of some spectacular music - and Grable scores big with Ameche in a couple of duets; some fast tap-dancing with the famed Condos Brothers; and a dazzling "Conga To Nursery Rhyme" ballroom sequence, partnered by the film's choreographer, the great Hermes Pan. And there are some nice comedy touches from the rubber-legged Charlotte Greenwood, who is paired off with comedian Jack Haley.

It's a fun-filled musical treat, suitable for viewing by all the family. And it is unusual that there is no "backstage" routines, which bacame all too familiar in later Grable musicals. In fact, this film is recognised as the musical that took the genre into the realms of the "real" world long before Gene Kelly did the same for "On the Town" (1952). Highly recommended.
