3.0 out of 5 stars Eastwood Western!, 7 Mar 2004

This review is from: Joe Kidd [DVD] [1972] (DVD)
This 1972 picture is possibly the weakest of the 10 westerns that Clint made during his carrer. However this does not make Joe Kid a bad movie, it's just not as good as the Dollars triology, Josey Wales, High Plains drifter or Unforgiven, but on the other hand it's at the same level of Two Mules for Sister Sara, wich makes this dvd essential for Clint's western movies fans.
Directed by veteran director John Sturges (Gunfigth at OK Corral and the Great escape)Joe Kid his a competent action western presenting Clint in one of his variations of the Man with no Name caracther, and showcasing a climatic finale that envolves a train...
The dvd has no extras but the film is presented on the original widescreen aspect ratio and several subtitles.

4.0 out of 5 stars Still somewhat al dente, but ripening indeed, 18 Sep 2006

This review is from: Joe Kidd [DVD] [1972] (DVD)
Of course Clint Eastwood has aged, but Joe Kidd is still amazingly fresh. The plot has also aged a lot but the character is still very attractive. What we like in this Joe Kidd is his insolence, his calculated slowness that enhances the final reaction that comes like an act of divine justice from a simple human being. We are so glad he reacted like that and he killed the bad guy or punched the sheriff or whatever, because he gave us the twenty seconds we needed to build our conviction that he was going to teach a good and deserved lesson to the dumb cesspit of an opponent of his. And Joe Kidd is very generous in good thrashing lessons. As for the theme, nothing special: the conflict between the local Mexicans of New Mexico and the imported yankee businessmen who want to control the land to raise as much cattle as possible. Their symbols are high-quality guns and barbed wire. And in spite of the fact that it is these cattlemen who have won all over in real history, we are glad they fail in this particular film. And yet they fail in a completely idealistic way: the Mexican leader is convinced to give himself up to US justice in about two minutes. And with no guarantee at all that this US justice is going to be just in the end. And we know better. So we just enjoy this surreal film as the simple entertainment it is. Reality will come back soon enough at the end of the film.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Film, 5 Feb 2009
By M. Kironde (Manchester) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Joe Kidd [DVD] [1972] (DVD)
This is one of Clint Eastwood's best films with brilliant performances from Robert Duvall as Frank Harlan and John Saxon as Luis Chama. The film has a brilliant story about a stranger called Joe Kidd who arrives in a New Mexican Town of Sinola where Luis Chama has organized a revolt against the local landowners who are throwing the poor off land that's rightfully theirs. However when a posse supported by Landowner Frank Harlan is formed to capture Luis, Kidd is invited to join but prefers to remain neutral. The posse capture five mexican hostages and threaten to kill them unless Luis surrenders to them. Kidd later on betrays the posse and saves the Mexican hostages afterwards kidd captures Luis and delivers him to the sheriff.
