Amazon.co.uk Review
Val Kilmer stars in The Ghost and the Darkness as Lt Col John Patterson, a 19th-century Irish engineer drafted by Britain's railroad bosses to build a trestle bridge over an African river, thus expanding the empire a tiny bit more. In Tsavo, Patterson is instantly hailed for killing a man-eating lion that had been making life hell for native workers. But morale sinks when two more unstoppable big cats devour more men and destroy the project. Along comes an, expatriate American hunter (Michael Douglas) to help Patterson face the almost preternatural powers of the two killers. The script by William Goldman (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid) is based on fact, though the film owes more to Steven Spielberg (specifically to Jaws) than history. There are also suggestive echoes of Kipling and Conrad in the material and characters, and there are hints of emotional complexity and psychological nuance that make one wish this could have been a great film instead of a merely fun one.--Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent African Adventure, 9 Jul 2001
By A Customer
The combination of visual backdrops, excellent chemistry between the actors(Kilmer and Douglas), and the realisation that this isnt fiction, makes this film an excellent watch. True, it may be slightly slow in its build up, but that shows Africa excellently and with a sort of invincible type evil about the lions, it really makes you wonder whether the lions really were normal animals. The atmosphere of Africa in the 19th century is portrayed excellently, and anyone who's a fan of Africa it self will appreciate this film with its many excellent views of the open plains and mountain locations This film will not disappoint many.

4.0 out of 5 stars The beauty and the power of Lions immortalised, 27 Feb 2001
By A Customer
The strength of this films comes from the stunning visual effects used for the Lions. Their size and grace adds to the fear they strike into the minds of the tribe they have begun to attack. Turned maneaters, they must be hunted down and that is where Val Kilmer and Michael Douglas come in. A powerful film added to by the power of the lions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Adventure, 3 Nov 2003
By Ms. S. Lee "Enigma" - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is not your typical film. Set in South Africa, Val Kilmer is set on an impossible mission to complete the building of a railway bridge.....sounds very boring...but I can assure you it isnt!!!
The story continues as the local people help to build the bridge until people start to get killed by a pair of Lions known to the locals as "The Ghost and the Darkness".
The special effects are brilliant and the film keep you going until the end, with you wanting to see what happens.
I would definately rate this film, its not got strong language or horror or sex scenes, just good old fashioned good script and very watchable.
I suggest you buy it I promise you wont be disappointed
