Synopsis
Anthony Asquith, more famous for his direction of George Bernard Shaw's PYGMALION, here adapts the lighter, though still socially conscious Shaw play, THE MILLIONAIRESS. Sophia Loren, as the beautiful, statuesque heiress, Epifinia, can't find a man who measures up to her late father's marriage test. The prospective groom must be able to turn five hundred pounds into fifteen thousand pounds in three months. In despair she jumps into the Thames, only to be ignored by Doctor Kabir (Peter Sellers), who's passing by in his row boat. Though less slapstick than his portrayal of the bumbling Indian actor in THE PARTY, Sellers still brings his characteristic humorous fumbling to the role of the devoted doctor. He's married to science, and thus resists marriage to the spoiled Epifinia. Besides, to pass his mother's test a prospective bride is sent out with just the clothes on her back and five hundred rupees and must make her way in the world for three months.
When they both accept the test Epifinia goes to work for Joe, a small time pasta maker, played by Vittorio De Sica. Known more as a director (he directed Loren in her Oscar winning performance in TWO WOMEN), De Sica brings a quiet dignity to his part. Just as Dr. Kabir is about to fail at his test he receives some unexpected help from Epifinia's lawyer, the ever delightful Alistair Sim and from his old teacher, Professor Noel, who bears a distinct similarity, in looks and appearance, to G.B. Shaw. On a tangential note, in the final scene Sophia Loren wears one of the silliest hats in the history of the movies.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Romance, or a Comedy?, 8 Aug 2001
By A Customer
Is this film a romance or a comedy? Well both really. A nice change to see Peter Sellers toning down is physically idiotic chaos to give a straight performance. His voice this time is Indian, and a fittingly impressive one too! The transfer to DVD is impressive too for a 1960 film, the colour is also enriched compared to the video release some years back. Sophia Loren looks stunning too!

1.0 out of 5 stars The Poor Millionairess, 1 Oct 2003
By A. Boocock (West Yorkshire, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I looked forward to this film with great anticipation, and was on the whole let down. Some films are timeless, others, like this just do not age well. The story is very weak, (as are the supporting characters) and the script dated and lacking in laughs. Peter Sellers is far from his best, playing a watered down version of the character he portrays in the hilarious "The Party." Apparently his relationship with Sophia Loren began while filming this, so I expected lots of on screen chemistry. There are glimpses of this but the actors have very little to work with due to the affore mentioned poor script. I keep the film in my collection as a Peter Sellers fan, otherwise it would be in the bin.

1.0 out of 5 stars DVD picture quality is terrible. I would rate it No Stars if I could., 2 Mar 2007
I remember seeing this on the tv as a child, and bought it to see in widescreen with Peter Sellers and Sophia Loren. The film is just as I remember it.

BUT - Maybe it is just my disc, but I think Prism Leisure have a cheek putting this out for sale if it is not, the quality on my disc is dire, it's a pretty poor transfer of a widescreen picture on to the old 4:3 format with black bars top and bottom, now I have good DVDs with the transfer done this way. But here the picture quality is really poor, the colours faded and dull giving it a grubby unwashed look. If I had not bought it for [...]I would have taken it back.

4.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Sophia Loren!
Peter Sellers is an Indian doctor, very earnest and funny in a subtle way (not like Sellers in The Party). Read more
