Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

It's the Peterborough effect--four young lads from middle England led by music critic and main songwriter Adam Haworth, with a drummer who's recently played with Courtney Love, and has a penchant for 1960s psychedelic pop. Beat Your Crazy Head Against The Sky is an ambitious debut, opening with the anthemic "T-Shirt 69", a tantalising wall-of-sound complete with soaring chorus and rich melodies--Captain Soul sound like the Beach Boys meet Muse. The track "Coming Up For Air", for instance, is an epic mix of sawing feedback and impeccable surf-style harmonies. In places the lyrics are simplistic--"Can you feel it in the air/The turning of the tide/Children of the time wore flowers in their hair" is delivered without a shred of irony--but there are enough tunes and attitude to make this a hit both for Captain Soul and for Alan McGee's Poptones label. --Lucy O'Brien

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth a place in any record collection., 5 April 2001
I ordered this album and then read a poor review in Modjo who said it resembled "Britpop plodders" The Bluetones and Cast. Well, seeing as The Bluetones are my favourite band and I have 2 out of 3 Cast albums, I wasn't disappointed. Having only listened to the album about 5 times the whole way through so far, I think it's fair to say that I haven't yet found a song that I dislike, the best being "T-Shirt 69", "Coming Up For Air" and "Last Chance Saloon" although by this time next week I'll probably like others more, as that is the type of album that this is. Bluetones-esque guitars in most songs and some beatuiful melodies over the top. The use of the flute in "Fragile As A Butterfly" shows good variation and the orchestral parts of "When The Orchestra Plays" are very well-written.

5.0 out of 5 stars Like indie guitar rock with harmonies? Then you'll love this, 30 May 2001

Anyone who's a fan of guitar-based pop rock will love this album. A modern day Byrds' influened album. They have a Rickenbacker (which gets extra points from me). An album full of singalong classic songs. Do yourself a favour. Buy this album. See them live. Learn to love Captain Soul.

1.0 out of 5 stars Oh no, no, NO!, 17 Feb 2005

This album may be very reasonably priced, but then again so are some aftershaves. This album is like a cheap, imitation aftershave - when you first put it on you think it's okay but after a while it stinks.

On the first play, I thought it sounded okay but wasn't really taking a lot of notice. There was a certain Merseybeat sound about some of the tunes but that was about it.

Then I listened to it again and started to notice how bad some of the tracks were. So, giving the album it's fair chance I listened to it again....for the last time.

"There Goes My Life" and "T Shirt 69" are about the best thing on this album, but even these tracks are as well crafted as a flat packed wardrobe. The rest of the album is irritatingly bad - the tunes stick in your head the same way that "Agadoo" and "The Birdie Song" did. The album ends with two absolute turkeys - "Last Chance Saloon" and "When The Orchestra Plays". Shudderingly awful songs with lyrics that could have been written by The Cheeky Girls.

An astoundingly tacky album. Avoid, avoid, avoid!!

This is a strange mix of influences. But, nothing new or exciting.
