If you are looking for a particular Hovhaness work on this CD, you will obviously want to buy it. However, be warned: the CD boasts HDCD sound, but really to no purpose at all, as approximately two thirds of the programme are recorded in mono, and the other third is, although stereo, hardly of demonstration quality. The Concerto for Orchestra is of early 1950s vintage; the Magnificat, although recorded in the 1960s, is presented in constricted mono sound; and that leaves us with only Symphony No.15 in half decent sound. Still, if you can find a bargain (as I did, around £4.00) then you may feel, like I do, that for that price it is worth it for the symphony alone. For the Hovhaness aficionado it is a great historical document, with interesting anecdotal liner notes. For the audiophile looking for something to give their hi-fi a burn it will be a real disappointment.
