Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Fun Lovin' Criminals have always been a talented, sensitive band who undermine themselves by their insistence that they are actually suave gangsters and wiseguys who, should you cross them, will ensure that you "sleep with da fishes". Maybe this schtick worked as an initial attention-grabbing device, but it's surely now time to drop the horses' heads and violin cases and just be the tremendous band they frequently are. Loco (it's a shame about the unimaginative title) contains some very bizarre snippets and much truly excellent music. The opening punky splurge "Where The Bums Go" is plain daft and suggests a cack-handed Ramones tribute band, but the title track (and ad soundtrack) is FLCs at their finest, a sly and languid slice of cool, knowing funk. And so it goes on: "Run Daddy Run" finds them donning their frayed streetwise threads again, but "Half a Block" is ruminative and endearingly graceful. They get cooler and better as the album progresses; "Underground" is a beauteous pledge of love and friendship and the closing "Little Song" is expansive and warm. So, ignore the "plastic gangster" hype: there is gorgeous, considered music here. --Ian Gittins

2.0 out of 5 stars a dissapointing effort, 21 Jan 2002
By A Customer
I am a huge Fun Lovin Criminals fan and love all of their work from Come Find Yourself through to Mimosa (possibly their best to date). However in LOCO I found an album that really was not up to the usual high standards that I have come to expect from the band. It almost seemed like the band are running out of ideas which I desperatley hope they aren't. The real letdown comes in the form of some dull repetative tracks. It seems rather than writing the classic lyrics which make the band what they are they have simply replaced these with unecassary swearing that just seems out of place. It is as if Huey (one of the coolest people on the planet), Fast and Macky think that this makes them seem tougher somehow. If you want my advice go for one of the earlier albums and you will not be dissapointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Underground NYC hip-hoppers do the funk/pop thang, 7 Aug 2001
By A Customer
Considering FLC is born and bred from NYC, it's distressing to live on my side of the pond (USA) and miss out on all their schmoove gigs. "Loco" certainly brings out a lot of the UK influence they must have garnered from their time on the road - songs like "Bump," "Swashbucklin' in Brooklyn" and the title track itself sound like discotheque rave-ups more than ghetto blastin' hip-hop. While FLC may be moving their sound a bit with this record, they certainly aren't ditching their roots, with songs like "Run Daddy Run," "My Sin," and "Microphone Fiend" keepin' it real. "Where the Bums Go" and "Dickholder" show they still enjoy gettin' a little wild once in a while - which makes us rock fans feel a bit better. Flat out, FLC is one of the best bands from the US to come out in the past ten years, both in terms of talent (Huey is one of the best guitarists out there - period) and songwriting capability, and it's saddening that they don't get more exposure in their homeland. While the new album certainly can't touch the raw rock n' hip-hop pleasure of "Come Find Yourself," it's still FLC at it's finest, and that makes it better than anything on the Billboard top 40 anyway.

3.0 out of 5 stars Full of Lovin' but not much Fun, 29 Mar 2001
By A Customer
This latest album from the Funs leans more towards the poppy hip-hop sound of '100% Columbian'. If you're expecting the hard-line mix of mellow urban beats and meaty guitar choruses then think again. But if you're looking for a deeply laid back sound to wile away your up-coming summer hols to then you can't go much wrong.
