Based on the only (very favourable) review of this film on this site to date I had, alas, the misfortune to purchase it a few days ago. The picture quality is worse than appalling - the transfer is clearly from videotape with all its attendant blemishes and dropouts. It is fuzzy with quite awful colour and though the original movie was clearly shot in scope the presentation here is 4:3 with extensive cropping at both sides. Totally unwatchable. I threw it in the bin after 20 seconds of viewing.

I notice that the Amazon sales rank of this dvd is in excess of 45,000. Surely I can't be the only person to have experienced this?

The plot of this film is simple enough - a thief accidentally becomes sheriff of a mining town - but the superb acting of the main characters (Lee Van Cleef and Antonio Sabato) sets this film above others. One of the other titles this film is known by in English, 'Beyond the Law', is a good description of the friendship between the two main characters: it goes beyond the law.

Lee Van Cleef is utterly convincing as Cudlip, the tricky thief who finds himself sheriff. His portrayal of this morally ambiguous character who does good sometimes despite himself is one of his best. He works well with Antonio Sabato who plays Ben Novack, the young immigrant, who, despite giving an initial appearance of being soft, turns out to be a tough but humane character.

As well, this film gives us a glimpse of the European roots of the American West: from the immigrants who made up the mining community to the music they brought with them.

All in all, it is an excellent film and I highly recommend it.
