Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Regularly touted as one of the best British sitcoms ever, Only Fools and Horses kicked off in 1981 when mobile phones were the size of bricks and wine bars were the ultimate places to hang out in. The formula was simple enough: Cockney wideboy Derek Trotter (brilliantly played by David Jason) dreams of better things for himself while sharing a cramped council flat in the nicely named Peckham tower block Nelson Mandela House with his unworldly brother Rodney and his sweet but doddery old granddad. Trouble is, Del's endless money-making schemes (such as his attempt to flog a consignment of one-legged turkeys, or his plan to sell bottled tap water) inevitably backfire, like the knackered old Robin Reliant van he uses to cart around all this faulty gear. Created by John Sullivan, who also sings the very catchy theme tune, Only Fools and Horses is a wonderful mix of dodgy but loveable characters (such as Del Boy's dimwit friend Trigger), knockabout slapstick (no-one falls down with as much comedic grace as Jason) and brilliantly crafted dialogue. Sadly, Leonard Pierce who played Granddad died in 1983; but his armchair in the Trotter household was filled in 1985 by Buster Merryfield as Uncle Albert (an old merchant seaman who bores Del and Rodney with tales of his war days). The show ran to seven series and ended with characteristic warmth in 1991, when Del Boy became a father; but the Trotters made occasional returns to the small screens with six hugely popular one-off Christmas specials. As Del Boy himself might say: "Lovely jubbly". --Edward Lawrenson

5.0 out of 5 stars The Classic TV comedy must have., 24 Aug 2001
By A Customer
This collection has to be in your collection, the early 'Grandad' only fools to me are the best, they are raw comedy with introductions to the main characters such as Trigger calling Rodney Dave and Rodney asking if they call Trigger-Trigger because he carries a gun "no, it's cos he looks like an horse" CLASSIC.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great series, 17 July 2003
I recently started my Only Fools and Horses dvd collection about 6 months ago and have now got all of the 11 dvds. This one was the first of the 11 which i bought and i must say how great it is. I had never seen the first series really so it was a new series to me. It has six episodes which are all enjoyable and bring back alot of memories to ofah fans so this one is a must have to people who have loved the adventures of Del boy and the rest of the Trotter clan.

5.0 out of 5 stars An admirable start of Britain's Best Sitcom., 8 Dec 2007
Although hailed by many 'Fools' fans, I personally love the first series. After first seeing it six years ago, I still laugh out loud at this series maybe moreso than any other.

The first series is not my favourite series (Series Three and Six are my favourites) however there are some splendid moments. Includimg Rodney signing up to Trotter's Independent Traders (Big Brother); The brothers chatting up transvestites (Go West Young Man); the con trick with the statue (Cash and Curry); Del being engaged to a 'homicidal' poisioner (The Second Time Around); Del's short lived Trotter's Ethnic Tours (A Slow Bus to Chingford); the nuclear fall out shelter (The Russians are Coming) and of course the first festive episode where Grandad leaves the giblets in the turkey (Christmas Crackers).

Overall a worthwhile buy if only for the episodes: 'Go West Young Man' and 'Cash and Curry.'
