For years now this recording of the Schumann piano concerto and the Franck Symphonic Variations, with the legendary Czech pianist, Ivan Moravec, has been on everybody's Desert Island Disc lists. And in this latest edition, you also get the beautifully played Schumann Kinderszenen. Moravec studied with the reclusive (and idiosyncratic) Italian genius of the piano, Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli; and these experiences with the Italian maestro only further encouraged him to develop his own views and his own approaches. In any case, whatever other recordings of the Schumann you may already own, this one is a must add. It stands as the best, or at least one of the best, ever. The Schumann concerto is among the most difficult pieces in the world of western music, not particularly to play as such, but to perform successfully. It demands a mysterious combination of heroic lyricism, utter simplicity of heart, and a unique clarity of intellect ... not to mention wise mastery of piano tone and varieties of touch. The majority of recordings err, on the side of virtuoso bravura, leaving you feeling that the whole concerto has been spun off so easily that it must be music that doesn't amount to much more than a lovely surface. Other recordings ... or live performances, more typically .... err on the side of trying to push and pull the music, playing fast then playing slow, then exaggerating this phrase, then that one; all in some misguided attempt to make the music speak deeply. But the secrets of the Schumann piano concerto do not yield themselve to either sort of banging about, no matter how sincerely the pianist may be knocking on the door. The successful versions, the ones you simply must keep, make it all sound so entirely songful and easily played. Emphasis is subtle, if you can hear it at all. Ivan Moravec is a great master of these musical matters, and you simply owe it to yourself to give him a listen. I find the Franck Symphonic Variations rather less compelling than the Schumann, although in Moravec's hands they sound fine. The Czech Philharmonic, led by the richly wisened and venerable Vaclac Neumann, are with the pianist every musical step of the way. NO wonder this recording holds its own special place on the frequently played CD shelf. Watch out for friends who want to borrow this one, it almost never comes back home. Highly recommended.
