Amazon.co.uk Review

It is surprising that EA relaunched F1 Championship Season 2000 with the complete 2000 season quite so soon, but eventually every EA Sports title takes to the annual update trail.

For statistical die-hards the game is up to date until Spring 2001, which some may perceive as an advantage over Formula One Grand Prix 3. If your machine is powerful enough, all the visual trimmings to make the race the way it's watched at home can be re-enabled.

The radio link purports to be the same as heard by real-life drivers. In real life it's doubtful that common sense is spelled out to the driver like, for example, the necessity of staying on the track. It's another feature that would be tried and forgotten other than for the lap time updates--if you don't have the seconds necessary to read the onscreen displays.

Then there is the pace lap, EA's homage to televised Formula One racing coverage. Sadly it's a waste of time when you want to get your hands dirty competing. It's not all bad, however, and the best new feature is the driving school where your general skills are tested, including achieving a certain manoeuvre or distance in a given number of seconds, and graded by shades of medal. As a training mode it's quite effective.

That training is affected when set to ultra-realistic and the cars slide across the track as if still in arcade mode. The physics have improved, but in the benchmark GP3 the car's visual reaction fits the handling. If you have the original EA F1 2000, it's best waiting for the inevitable 2001 edition for this problem to be addressed rather than settling for this interim update. --Kenneth Henry

4.0 out of 5 stars Good easy fun!!, 9 May 2002
I was taking a risk when i bought this. Could I buy the mor up to date and so thought better Formula 1 2001 Platinum or this, an old, out dated game by EA? I bought this and am very glad I took the chance!!
The game is a very basic interpretation of Formula 1 and is all the better for it. No over complex setting up and braking points, just pure fun. The cars handle well, if feeling a bit light and the damage is challenging but fun at the same time. Its a case of 1 crash and your out but then you can take alternate lines through corners avoiding the battling computer cars. The graphics are pretty stunning with No-Pop-up and very highly detailed cars. Even the deflectors down the side are modelled as they are usually stuck to the car models. The damage is also very good with the wings rubbing against your tires and slowing you down and engine failures also play a part. Its a laugh when Michael Schumacher is miles ahead and you shoot past him with smoke pouring from his engine.
Also, the damage has a noticable effect on your car with the handling worsening when the wings are lost.
I bought it new for a tenner and am very happy!! I can't recommed the Platinum 2001 game over this!! Get this if you love F1

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the best F1 game ever release, 21 Mar 2001
By A Customer
I could not wait for this to be release on the PS2, and as soon as it did it wound up on my console.

It's fantasic, the graphics are superb, sounds is an improvement over the other F1 games on the and the gameplay, whilst being v difficult, is great once you get used to it.

I have brought every F1 game for the PS1 over the years and always had the same problem - turn it on, select Medium difficulty and a full championship and I would pole + win every race bar Monaco and when the engine died. Even on Hard I won the champinship easily.

But with this one it took me 6 or 7 races even ti finish as the controls are so realistic, and now whilst I can still win most races on medium you have to be very careful when you lap or you need a pit stop and when in the pits you have to watch your speed.

Oh and one final thing when the car rolls, COOL!!!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Oh dear EA, 18 Feb 2001
By A Customer
If you're going to avoid one game for the PS2 make it this one. Rarely have a played such a bad racing game. I makes EA's last effort on the pSX look good. Where shall I start with what's wrong with this? This graphics look pathetic for a console of the PS2's capacity, the handling is dreadful, the races are deadly boring and completely pointless. In fact the only thing I like about this game is watching the rather nice pitstop. I think it speaks volumes when I say I have an F1 game on the PC that is 6 years old yet still beats this hands down in every way. For the love of God EA, give the sports sims to somebody who can develop properly.
