Buyers Beware!, 14 Mar 2001
By A Customer
As the covers states, there is no Bowie music on this CD, though of course, buying through Amazon, you would not be aware of this until your copy arrives. I found the narration really annoying. The woman who relates Bowie's story repeats his name at regular intervals, but always as "Bow-ie" (to rhyme with "now") as opposed to "Bow-ie" (to rhyme with "low"). After the first few minutes fans will find this really, really grating. You would think that someone supposedly telling the story of his life would at least have gone to the trouble of finding out how to pronounce his name properly. The story seems to come direct from chapters of "Alias David Bowie" by Peter and Leni Gillman, with lots of the more lurid details of Bowie's past, including the family madness. Frankly, if it's this side of his past you are looking for, you'd been better advised to look for a second hand copy of the Gillman's book, though far be it for me to publicise their sensationalist account. On the plus side, its nicely packaged and the front cover pic is rather good. This is a CD for only the most hardened fans, and even then for the completist alone. I think it's unlikely anyone would want to sit and listen to this for more than a few minutes.
