Product Description

Description
This operatically menacing Finland outfit's third record isa showcase for frontman Alexi Laiho's prog-meets-death-metal songwriting imagination and the near-euphoric, omnipresentkeyboards of Janne Warman. Still navigating their chosen terrain, Bodom spreads its wings wide on tracks like "Bodom AtMidnight", which toggle between familiarly punishing riffs and orchestrated flourishes which border on the theatricality of The Trans-Siberian Orchestra. But when they forge a middle ground on the cathedral-goth synth-stomp of "Everytime IDie", Children begin to hint at their soon-to-come maturation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Musicianship at the Max, 20 May 2006
By H. Bredin "Child Of Bodom" (Cambridge) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Children of Bodom's talent is just excetional. Label them melodic death metal, however in reality, they are death metal with simply unbeliveable talent.

All you need to do is listen to the debut "something wild" and realise that the song structure is still the same... it just never ever gets boring.

Follow the reapers sees a moderate decrease in Bodoms electonic elements, but they are far from totally gone (thank heavens)

FTR also contain my favourite Bodom song out of their enture discography, the self titled.

Bodom are not only recommened for fans of speed/death metal but also for bands such as dragonforce and stratiovarious. just dont expect any clean vocals. Bodom scream like no one else, and its simply brilliant.

This is for fans of extreme musicianship and likewise, brutally fast and vicious. This album could put a smile on the face of a dragonforce fan, as it equally could for a 1349 fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Children Of Bodom ~ Follow The Reaper, 26 Nov 2004
Yea... first things first, i apologise for the unoriginal title of this review. i couldnt be bothered to think of a better one. oh well, worse things have happened.

Anyways. Getting round to the mighty Bodom...

The first album of theirs i bought was Hatebreeder, of which the excellent "Silent Night, Bodom Night" is a track. Then i invested in this second album. From the opening seconds of the CD, you can tell that Bodom's sound has progressed a lot in 2 years. Hatebreeder was more brutal with denser guitar work but on the whole "slower" lyrics. Follow the Reaper, meanwhile, has a more polished sound - particularly Janne's playing (who is the best death metal keyboardist EVER) The guitars are tighter, but they compliment the keyboards better. In my opinion the structure of the songs and written music is more complex... Alexi "Wildchild" Laiho is a pure genius, Alexander (who has since left the band) both compliments Alexi and also plays some fantastic solos himself. However, i think the biggest difference between the two albums is the voice. Alexi is a lot harsher on the later work, slightly more screamy. Or maybe im just imagining it. :S

The main reason i've compared these two albums, is because Hatebreeder is generally considered to be better than Follow The Reaper. I, personally, would recommend either of them. Follow The Reaper, does however, stand alone. "Everytime I Die" was the first Bodom song i heard :D ...n the video is great. Dont miss it! Other highlights include "Bodom After Midnight" and i do so like the cover of "Hellion." Tis good, tis good.

The only thing i have to say which is slightly negative, is the absence of written lyrics to, errr, sing along to - only 3 songs have the words.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great band, 30 Jun 2001
By A Customer
A mixture of death metal vocals and melodic heavy metal guitars, lots of solo's and hints of big 80's rock acts. Atmospheric and musically great, if you like long guitar tracks, gothic music and black metal with more melody and less vocals its a nicely rounded album. A few more vocals wouldnt go a miss but plenty of strong tracks.
