Children Of Bodom ~ Follow The Reaper, 26 Nov 2004
Yea... first things first, i apologise for the unoriginal title of this review. i couldnt be bothered to think of a better one. oh well, worse things have happened.Anyways. Getting round to the mighty Bodom... The first album of theirs i bought was Hatebreeder, of which the excellent "Silent Night, Bodom Night" is a track. Then i invested in this second album. From the opening seconds of the CD, you can tell that Bodom's sound has progressed a lot in 2 years. Hatebreeder was more brutal with denser guitar work but on the whole "slower" lyrics. Follow the Reaper, meanwhile, has a more polished sound - particularly Janne's playing (who is the best death metal keyboardist EVER) The guitars are tighter, but they compliment the keyboards better. In my opinion the structure of the songs and written music is more complex... Alexi "Wildchild" Laiho is a pure genius, Alexander (who has since left the band) both compliments Alexi and also plays some fantastic solos himself. However, i think the biggest difference between the two albums is the voice. Alexi is a lot harsher on the later work, slightly more screamy. Or maybe im just imagining it. :S The main reason i've compared these two albums, is because Hatebreeder is generally considered to be better than Follow The Reaper. I, personally, would recommend either of them. Follow The Reaper, does however, stand alone. "Everytime I Die" was the first Bodom song i heard :D ...n the video is great. Dont miss it! Other highlights include "Bodom After Midnight" and i do so like the cover of "Hellion." Tis good, tis good. The only thing i have to say which is slightly negative, is the absence of written lyrics to, errr, sing along to - only 3 songs have the words.
