In Independence Day, a scientist played by Jeff Goldblum once actually had a fistfight with a man (Bill Pullman) who is now president of the United States. That same president, late in the film, personally flies a jet fighter to deliver a payload of missiles against an attack by extraterrestrials. Independence Day is the kind of movie so giddy with its own outrageousness that one doesn't even blink at such howlers in the plot. Directed by Roland Emmerich, Independence Day is a pastiche of conventions from flying-saucer movies from the 1940s and 1950s, replete with icky monsters and bizarre coincidences that create convenient shortcuts in the story. (Such as the way the girlfriend of one of the film's heroes--played by Will Smith--just happens to run across the president's injured wife, who are then both rescued by Smith's character who somehow runs across them in alien-ravaged Los Angeles County.) The movie is just sheer fun, aided by a cast that knows how to balance the retro requirements of the genre with a more contemporary feel. --Tom Keogh

After the surprise hit of 1994, STARGATE, director Roland Emmerich was given a budget that would make possible a film that would eventually be one of the highest grossing movies of all time. The ground-breaking special effects went on to win an Oscar, & many of these, the miniatures, C.G.I. & digital effects are examined & explained in the comprehensive 'special features' which comprises the second of this 2 disc presentation. INDEPENDENCE DAY in this 'definitive edition' contains scenes not in the original cut, of which some make sense & others superfluous, but all most likely edited for time. For a sci-fi adventure film, the script throughout is eceptionally good with only minor cringe-making moments. The military & technical installations are authentic & the many crowd scenes, in particular, the 'panic in the streets' sequences are entirely believable & well-handled. The excellent cast, headed by Will Smith & Jeff Goldblum have well-drawn characters & have a terrific rapport in their scenes together. The 2 female leads are strong & also perfectly cast, as are all the supporting actors, but it is the rôle of President that keeps the whole thing together & here Bill Pullman surely gives the performance of his career. The rousing speech he gives just before the final showdown, is a well written piece of patriotic jargon & gift to any actor, though his character taking part in the aerial battle is open to contention!Read more ›

Independence Day is arguably one of the greatest SF alien invasion movies of all time. With REM’s ‘It’s the end of the world’ sampled near the beginning of the movie, you definitely know that Roland Emmerich’s view about alien encounters is more akin to War of the Worlds than E.T. Filled with stunning special effects, stirring music, unpretentious sentimentality and laced with good natured humour there is no need to bemoan the lack of character development or obvious narrative coincidences. There is no pretence at being a great cinematic masterpiece examining deep philosophical themes. This is a two hour long, ludicrously enjoyable, preposterously pompous, unbelievably incredible ‘backs against the wall’ slice of SF fantasy which still entertains after numerous viewings. Having just watched this again a few weeks after watching Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar I had to smile when I noticed that President Bill Pullman and senior NASA scientist Michael Caine both quoted or paraphrased Dylan Thomas’ “Do not go gentle into that good night”. Highly recommended for a first or repeat viewing.

When this film was released back in 96' We'd already seen
the early 'Star War' movies, which had impressive graphics at that time.
When they came to make 'independence day' film makers
were experimenting with new technology which at that time
was pretty realistic and set a 'benchmark' for future film
makers to improve upon.( we all know they have )
At the time the 'special effects were more than impressive..
The film -
'Giant' alien craft hover above significant locations
around the globe, they are hell- bent on wiping out both life
and the infra-structure of planet earth.
Attempts to communicate with the uninvited visitors proves
futile.
'Wlll smith' as Captain Steven Hiller to the rescue with a little
help from 'Randy Quaid' as 'Russell Casse'
Seriously this is a fast moving and very enjoyable movie
experience, plenty of, sometimes tongue-in-cheek action
sequences.
Blu-ray upgrade is pretty good.
A Sci-fi adventure always worth re-visiting occasionally.

Classic 90's action / sci-fi film by Roland Emmerich featuring Lonestar, Brundlefly and that guy with the irritating and talentless offspring. Contains endless alien peril, the decimation of many popular landmarks and the best presidential speech ever.

Hold on, I almost forgot Randy Quaid ' Hello boys, I'm baaaaack!'

Awesome movie, go watch it now!!

One of the best alien invasion movies I have ever seen. Very American, but global in perspective. Will Smith is fantastic in the lead role and many more of the actors in this film are so good as to pull you into the story and make you believe in their characters. The destruction sequences are well filmed and edited. There is an excellent tension throughout the movie, broken by light humour on occasion. Love it!

If you're thinking of adding this to your blu-ray collection then you've no doubt seen the film itself many times.

The DTS-Master Audio lossless track is stunning. Absolutely sensational and worth the upgrade alone should you have the equipment to be able to showcase lossless sound.

The video is excellent. Plenty of detail and light years ahead of any DVD version you may own. Pretty much the best the film is ever going to look.

Where the disc disappoints slightly is in the extras. Only some of the wealth of features from the previous DVD releases have made it to blu-ray.
There's no making of material that I remember enjoying in the past.
The commentaries are still there, and there's games and the original trailers in HD.

Whilst I wouldn't be surprised to see some sort of special edition next year to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the film, well this is definitely worth picking up for a tenner.

One of the better blockbusters of the 90's presented very nicely in high definition,
