Amazon.co.uk Review

Anyone who has seen and loved Neil Jordan's The Company of Wolves should feel right at home in his offbeat psychological thriller In Dreams. A sexy, very adult take on "Little Red Riding Hood", Wolves unreeled as a series of surreal fairy tales interwoven within the heated dreams of a young girl verging on womanhood. The film's patron saints were Freud and Jung (as sifted through Jordan's wickedly fertile imagination), and the duo is very much aboard for In Dreams as well. Here's a film that takes place entirely in dreamtime, where the dark, violent fantasies of Claire Cooper (Annette Bening)--wife, mother and illustrator of children's books--play out unpoliced by superego, conscience or society. On the face of it, Claire's a clairvoyant whose mind becomes more and more possessed by child-killer Vivian Thompson (Robert Downey Jr.). Cops and shrinks refuse to take her seriously until she loses her own daughter and much, much more. Tapping into weird images of her soulmate's childhood, when he was abused by a hateful mother in a house now submerged in a nearby reservoir, Claire comes closer and closer to her gender-shifting bad boy (and his latest victim). From start to finish, In Dreams dwells in hyper-reality. Whether leeched of or drenched in colour, slipping eerily through an underwater world, rushing madly toward catastrophe--every hallucinatory shot is saturated with menace. It's the kind of potent, unresolved menace that haunts your waking day after a particularly unsettling nightmare. Watch this gorgeous film through Claire's mind, where she and her murderous doppelganger act out a terrible Oedipal drama driven by sex and jealousy. Bening and Downey deliver superb, risky performances, and Darius Khondji's cinematography, with almost every frame punctuated by blood-reds, is sensuously dreamlike. In Dreams is one of those great, flawed films that reaches for more than it ultimately achieves. --Kathleen Murphy, Amazon.com

4.0 out of 5 stars In Dreams, 6 Nov 2004
A very intersting horror with lots of twists. One to watch. The story is based on a serial killer who enters the mind of an innocent woman. A good thriller/ horror. Sounds strange, but is good.

4.0 out of 5 stars A dark, enchanting movie from beginning to end!, 12 May 2002
By A Customer
This is the perfect video for anybody who likes something different in a film. From the superb, ethereal, opening sequence to the satisfying twists in the story - this film is one filled with mystery and is an excellent modern thriller. Usually I hate films like that, but this had me hooked!

Neil Jordan directs the film beautifully. The colours and texture come across all the way through, watch it in a darkened room and you'll feel like you are there. Annette Bening gives a superb performance as Claire. Her acting is incredible, particularly in scenes where Claire is extremely upset and confused at the strange dreams she has. Robert Downey Jr gives a fantastic performance as the childlike man, Vivian. It's just a pity he's not in it more, as he really can be quite chilling as well as weirdly amusing.

The film does drag a little towards the middle, but give it a chance. After an interesting start I promise this film picks up speed again towards the end!

I found this film perfect viewing, mostly because I'm no fan of the average Hollywood thriller/murder mystery/horror films. In my opinion "In Dreams" has a quality often found in arty French films. It's just different, emotional and in depth. I have to give it 4 stars!

5.0 out of 5 stars A must see!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, 28 Aug 2002
By MRS J A GLENISTER (Reading, Berkshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
Every now and then a film comes along, often with very little publicity or apparent interest, that breaks the mould and leaves you a little dumb struck as to how it made so little impact on release.
This was one of those films for me. The only reason I got to hear of it was as a trailer on another video I rented, but it has to be one of the best films I have seen in some time - and I watch a lot!!
It is an often hard hitting film in that is refuses to follow the typical cliched finales of films in it's genre where every good person survives, every bad person dies and the world is put to rights! You THINK you know where it's going and it goes in completely the other direction.
It is a dark film in which heroine Annette Benning (excellent as the tormented mother with psychic powers) has a never fully explained psychic link with a psychotic killer played by Robert Downey Jnr. It results in her seeing flashes of the crimes he commits, as well as hearing him speak to her mind, which she does not see initially as the prompting he is sending her to catch him and stop him killing again. Unsure at first as to how to handle her abilities, and the killer's pursuit of her attention, Benning's character slowly begins to teeter on the edge of sanity (as Downey Jr's character slowly tears her life apart). It's often painful to watch her gradually cornered like a rat in a maze, losing everyone and everything in the process as Downey Jnr's nasty character plays cruel games with her mind.
It's an odd role for Downey Jr, who you see little of til the near end. His character is perhaps a little over played and just why he's so drawn to Benning's character as his psychic link is never really fully explored (as is the rhyme that keeps being quoted which left me baffled as to it's meaning).
Still, any narky bits are of little significance as the film as a whole is quite unique in it's storyline and so you don't mind any of the minor weaknesses.
Very atmospheric, plenty of on the endge of your seat moments and a rather unusual twist on the "happy ending" than most films of this nature setle for.
Definitely worth a viewing!!
