Amazon.co.uk Review

Tootsie inevitably looks dated in some respects now, but it's still fabulous in others--the sexual politics look distinctly faded in their sniggering approach to sexual ambiguities, while the sardonic portrayal of a showbiz that loathes perfectionism is still both timely and hysterically funny. Dustin Hoffman's portrayal of Michael Dorsey is a memorable self-caricature--the man is so obsessed with the craft of acting that he refuses to sit down when playing a tomato in a commercial, and so producers run away rather than work with him. By playing Dorothy Michaels playing her soap character, Dorsey gives himself the freedom to be a bad and popular actor. He is so busy with the surface of being a woman--the voice, the hair, the frocks--and with all the bad faith of his and Dorothy's emotional lives, that he learns to relax into the pleasure of performance. This aspect of the film is far more interesting, ironic and funny than the corny New Man moralising about sexual roles that goes with it. Jessica Lange got, and earned, an Oscar for her sensitive straight woman performance as the colleague Michael falls for, and Bill Murray, Teri Garr, Geena Davis (momentarily) and Charles Durning all turn in reliable supporting roles. Sydney Pollack directs efficiently rather than inspiredly--oddly, he earns almost more credit for his well-observed performance as Michael's world-weary agent.

On the DVD: The DVD is presented in crisp Dolby Digital sound and with the original theatrical visual ratio of 2.35:1; enhanced for 16:9 widescreen televisions. It is dubbed into French, German, Italian and Spanish and has subtitles in most European languages as well as Arabic, Hindi and Hebrew. The only special features are the theatrical trailer and filmographies for the leading performers and director. --Roz Kaveney

5.0 out of 5 stars The best romantic cross-gender comedy of the last Millennium, 7 Feb 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Tootsie [VHS] [1982] (VHS Tape)
Dustin Hoffman is magnificent in this tender and amusing comedy of gender differentials in eighties New York. Michael Dorsey (Hoffman) is a talented actor with a fearsome reputation for his attitude to inept directors. A chance situation coaching a hopeless pupil for a part in a popular, long-running soap opera leads to Dorsey dressing in drag and winning the part for himself and gaining immense popularity for his feisty interpretation! Whilst becoming more in tune with his female alter-ego he finds himself falling hoplessley in love with the beautiful leading lady (a wonderful performance from Jessica Lange)whose widowed father falls in love with Hoffman's character! Chaos ensues as Hoffman struggles to keep all parties happy and produces an Oscar winning performance in the process. His subtle interpretation of a man realising what understanding a woman's psyche entails and superb comic timing combines to make a hilarious and touching movie. There are great cameos too from Bill Murray as Hoffman's abstract, playwriting flatmate and the film's director, Sidney Pollack, as Hoffman's bemused agent. Altogether a timeless movie which improves with repeated viewing. Excellent stuff!

5.0 out of 5 stars Tootsie's a comic classic!, 11 Oct 2003

It must be a challenge for any male actor to play a woman. Dustin Hoffman is probably one of the few actors in film history who has certainly risen to the challenge and succeeded. Tootsie is one of the most wittiest and memorable comedies of all time.
Dustin Hoffman is excellent as struggling actor Michael Dorsey whose awkward and difficult personality renders him unemployable.Matters come to a head when he dresses as a woman and finds that his fortunes change when he is hired by the producers of a daytime soap and becomes an overnight sensation and major celebrity. As his celebrity increases his life becomes more complicated as he copes with his 'double,'life.
I always felt that Dustin Hoffman should have won the Oscar for Best Actor the year he was nominated. He gives a brilliant performance as Michael Dorsey aka Dorothy Michaels and is totally believable as a woman as he captures the essence of being a woman so vividly on screen.
This is one of the best film comedies of all time and it has a great supporting cast of actors such as Jessica Lange, Bill Murray, Dabney Coleman, Charles Durning and Teri Garr. I highly recommend this film to everyone to see because you won't ever quite see another film comedy like this in your lifetime.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still as great after all these years!, 9 Oct 2009
By Veronica (London, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Tootsie [DVD] [1982] (DVD)
What can I say, this still makes me laugh and cry after many viewings over many years, it is simply one of the best films ever made and was quite ahead of its time. Funny, thought provoking, intelligent and sweet- Dustin is as always fantastic and the now sadly departed Sydney Pollack (director) makes a cameo in a couple of unforgettably hilarious scenes. Buy it, you won't regret it!
