Carl Nielsen commenced work on his violin concerto in Grieg's compositional hut in Norway. It is still classical in style, very genial and very relaxed, but also more interesting and unconventional. It shares the some of the same formal characteristics as Shostakovich's much later first violin concerto. But it says a lot for its worth that Nielsen's sounds just as modern as Shosta's.

The first few angular bars of Nielsen's do not hint at the glorious lyricism to come, though admittedly his concerto is not as lyrical as the Bruch that accompanies it on this CD. The allegro features the standard Nielsen touches: rapid repeated notes, grandness of vision, great humanity, and a gift for comedy. It is, like the composer himself, marvellously good-natured, although the intermezzo is at heart very sad. Also sad is the final cadenza, but this then leads to Nielsen putting on a good face and focussing on the good things in life.

Znaider's performance is outstanding. One hears every note, and his performance is perfectly integrated with the London Philharmonic conducted by Lawrence Foster. Znaider's sound is sweet, but also vehement where required. If you want to explore this concerto, this is my best recommendation.

The Bruch is equally as good. Znaider's violin is well to the fore with the orchestra taking more of a back seat. Znaider's playing is very beautiful and his tone is sweet. There is perfect phrasing, and he plays the moments of subtlety with great clarity, resulting overall in a deeper and fuller appreciation of this concerto.

The sound quality of this production is top-notch, showcasing the violin and the concertos in equal measure.
