Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
In XSquad, you play a character named John G Ash. He was at the top of his class at West Point, excelling in both marksmanship and urban combat simulation. Feeling the need to be rebellious, Ash went off on his own and formed team of problem-solvers, XSquad.

While it's possible to snap off some curt little orders to your squad mates, they're intelligence is a bit too artificial to be of much use to you. Luckily for you (though not for the game), you don't have to actually depend on them to finish any particular level. If you were dependent on their assistance, you'd probably never live to see the sun rise on the game's final level.

XSquad does make good use of the PS2 controller's two analogue joysticks. The left stick controls the general movement of the character, while the right stick is used for turning the character and aiming the weapon. You'll have fun shooting up enemies, unlocking puzzles, fragging level bosses and such, but the game won't provide much challenge. Setting the game's difficulty to "expert" might cause you to break a sweat.

In all, XSquad is a decent game, but would have been better had its story and characters been allowed to percolate a bit longer. In some ways it's amazing that Sony actually allowed EA/Square to proceed with a concept that must, at one time, have seemed to be rice paper thin. But if you're in the mood for a simple arcade shooter, there is a definite fun time to be had here. --Todd Mowatt

2.0 out of 5 stars Great variety - NOT!, 16 Feb 2001
By A Customer
You run through corridoors, open doors, go up lifts, wait for stupid video cuts to complete, order your team to cover your arse who then go running around in a sideways crab-like motion, shoot some bad guys from a long way away, then run through another corridoor, open another door etc etc etc.

Of all the PS2 games I own (SSX, DOA, Rayman, AquaAqua, Super Bust-a-move, Dynasty Warriors and Midnight Club) this is the one I come back to least and only if I am brain dead on alcohol because it's the only way I can find even the remotest enjoyment from it. My 11 year old Nephew likes it, 'though.

4.0 out of 5 stars Innovative, addictive but frustrating, 1 Jan 2001
There have been attempts before at action adventures that let you direct the other characters, but the simple and intuitive team commands of X-Squad make it feel like a whole new genre as you order, say, Maya to take cover (she's getting low on health), Melinda to check the path ahead (actually to draw the enemy's fire but we won't tell her that) and Judd to cover you while you sneak round to take out the bad guys from behind. Or, you're ambushed and you need to think fast - do you press on, take cover, or fall back and get out the sniper rifle? This aspect of X-Squad is innovative and a lot of fun.

However, the level designs are not exactly Metal Gear Solid, being mostly endless maze-like corridors with silly lock-release systems (unlike any actual building in existence) that give it an almost retro feel, added to by the end-of-level battles, which you have to get through before you can save the game (even the Continues are few & far between). You therefore find yourself going over the same ground again and again, getting more fed up with the confusing map system, the fiddly, oversensitive aiming, and Ash's stupid haircut, with each attempt. Strangely these are the things that games like MGS, Syphon Filter and Medal of Honor have already done superbly on PS1.

X-Squad is a promising first attempt on PS2, with the clever team element giving a whole new dimension, and it's great fun as far as it goes. Now, do I have an hour to make one more attempt at level 6?

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but not that good, 16 Dec 2000
By Stuart Macauley (London, England) - See all my reviews
This game, when announced, was full of promise. But what I found was okay, but not great. The controls are inventive, using both analogue sticks to control. One for forwards, back and strafe. The other for aiming. Character animation is smooth, but lip sync is awful! The overall scenery is plain and dull, but the mazes are well designed. But the learning curve is to high. And the auto aim needs you to have pin point accuracy in order for it to lock on an opponent and even then it wont stay if you more than an inch from the target which is very annoying. And while ammunition is in ample supply, health seems to be few and far between even on the first level, which is very annoying.

But X Squad does have a good side. Its quite challenging, promoting tactical thinking rather than running in headfirst as it will get you killed. Dive for cover or you're a sitting duck. And the enemy AI is quite good, they run for cover and take potshots at you. Buy this game if you have nothing else to buy.
