Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Complementing the excellent Rogue Spear, Urban Ops sees a return of the Rainbow Six team to our screens. Fans have been waiting for Urban Ops for what seems like a very long time, but now we can get back to the serious business of quelling terrorist groups and rescuing hostages. Urban Operations not only provides all the magic of the original game, it also brings along some magic of it's own.

The new "urban" levels are excellent and with a large number of civilians your target identification has to step up a notch--the days of shooting anything that moves are gone--you have to react correctly in a split second or risk failing the mission. Apart from the new missions, there are also five missions from the original Rainbow Six and an expansion to the online and multiplayer gaming options.

There are, as expected, a number of training missions, which also have improved options. Making custom missions and choosing from any of the levels with up to 50 terrorists, in a number of different gaming modes, including the new "defend" option, there are hours of fun to be had here. Combined with the levels of Rogue Spear and those in Covert Operations, the overall operational environment is enormous.

Rogue Spear fans will easily be able to step into gear and complete the missions with little difficulty, but the extended options customisation and multiplayer options will satisfy their gaming lust. The graphics are still fantastic and will appeal to any military gaming fan. With four new weapons to boot, Urban Ops is a true expansion pack to Rogue Spear and is a must-own. --Chris Hall

Manufacturer's Description

Step into a counter-terrorist team's worst nightmare--a hot fight in a densely populated area. Stray bullets could mean innocent casualties, and terrorists can hide amidst the frenzy of urban crowds.

Tenement housing in Mexico City, the London tube system, the pulsing streets of Istanbul or a hotel in Hong Kong. John Clark and newly appointed intelligence officer Kevin Sweeney take you into these concrete jungles, where you'll experience the most lethal missions the Rainbow Six team has ever faced.

It's your wits, nerves and training versus a barrage of cold-blooded, grenade-throwing terrorists. On their turf.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just gets better, 20 Jul 2001

After the rather disappointing Covert Ops, Urban Operations is superb. On-line mulitplayer gaming works extremely well and there is an very active modding community developing superb new levels, weapons & uniforms.

4.0 out of 5 stars Urban Ops, 20 Jan 2001

If you are thinking of buting this add on pack for Rouge Spear I strongly reccomend it. It is very cheap, you get ten missions thrown in, five urban operations missions, including one mission in a ficticious London Underground station. You also get five Classic missions which are great fun and very challenging, especially the two Recon missions. The only complaints I have about this pack are that it says the Urban missions are packed with innocent civilians, but only the first mission has lots of innocent shoppers and civialians in. The rest just have a few hostages like the other RS missions. The other complaint is i am yet to find a terrorist with a new, more dangerous skill. They are all still like they were in the origional RS. You also get 3 new weapons thrown in and a new uniform, a bio hazard suit, WOW. All in all though I do recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tango in sight, 12 Dec 2000

This is one of the better add-on packs out there. Whilst it only adds four new weapons and five new maps, it gives the existing game elements a thorough going-over, and is an essential purchase if you enjoy playing the game in 'Lone Wolf' mode. Which is good, as the central concept - five new maps set in claustraphobic urban environments, with civilians - doesn't really work. The new maps are fine, especially a carefully-crafted London Underground station, but the urban environments aren't all that different from the embassies, skyscrapers and chemical plants of the first two games, and the wandering civilians are essentially hostages, but out in the open. They either stand still and avoid getting in the way, or the run around madly, getting shot. The overall experience is generally quite frustrating - adding to the chaotic nature of the strategy, you can play the same mission several times and fail purely because the terrorists, hostages and civilians were placed inopportunely.

That said, it's still worth buying. Only three of the extra weapons are available in single-player mode (although the game is extremely easy to 'mod', as the weapon damage tables and so forth are stored as text files), and two of those are light machine-guns - not very useful for a covert operations unit. The silenced sniper rifle is intriguing, but not very well silenced, and in any case the terrorists have an implausible habit of shouting 'Intruders!' in a comical Scottish accent as your bullets shread their soft, yielding lungs. If you're at all interested in guns, death and killing (and who isn't?), 'UO' is fantastic - the existing arsenal of death-dealing hardware is fetishistically complete.

A clutch of the old 'Rainbow Six' missions have been updated and are available to play as a mini-campaign - in general they remain as they were, but with graphical improvements, although a couple have subtly-altered maps, too. Best of all, the various non-campaign play modes have been souped-up. You can now choose how many terrorists to scatter around the various maps, which now include the multiplayer scenarios (some of which are unplayable with more than a few terrorists, however, as you find yourself starting in rooms with dozens of tightly-packed baddies). Oh, and Kevin Sweeney, the British recon specialist, has been promoted to advisor status. And the foxy mission control woman has been reinstated from her 'Rogue Spear'-era anonymity. Note that you need 'Rogue Spear' to play it, not 'Rainbow Six', although you know that already.

In general then, it's 'Rogue Spear', but with extra bits. Fab!
