Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

With an early-January release date, it may be a bit early to nominate a record of the year but this has all the makings of a winner. Away from the clamour of grand opera and soaring symphonies, Fairest Isle takes us into the quiet, intimate world of English Elizabethan song, and you could hope for no better guide than Barbara Bonney. Her clear, beautifully rounded voice is superbly controlled, making light of a superb technique--if you want to hear art concealing art, look no further. This is intensely private music, in a programme which cleverly side-steps any risk of listener fatigue by starting with lute accompaniment (infinitely tender playing by Jacob Heringman), moving on to a viol quartet, then finally to the richer sound of the Academy of Ancient Music under Christopher Hogwood. Leavening the mix are three instrumental interludes. The piece which gives the disc its title is a blithe, dance-like song. Better known are some of the classics of English song: Dowland's "Come again" and "Flow my Tears", Morley's "It was a lover and his lass", and Purcell's "If music be the food of love" and "When I am laid in earth", a heart-in-mouth performance that makes time stand still. --Keith Clarke

5.0 out of 5 stars A disc to treasure, 19 Mar 2001
By A Customer
I wouldn't previously have associated Barbara Bonney with 16th and 17th century English music, but as this her latest gem of a disc reveals, she is totally at home in the repertoire. Ms Bonney's lovely clear voice is ideally suited to the intimate style of this music and, for me, she captures the poetry, subtlety and contrasting moods of the songs beautifully.

With sensitive accompaniment, some enjoyable instrumental numbers, excellent sound quality and generous CD notes (including the full text of the songs in three languages), what more can I say about this disc? - except buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb collection. Buy it!, 28 Sep 2001
By Rev John P Adams (Torrington, Devon United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
An imaginative collection of songs beautifully sung by Barbara Bonney, with interludes for viols and strings. The recording is excellent too. If you like this kind of music this is a must buy, which you will listen to again and again.

5.0 out of 5 stars A delight from beginning to end!, 5 Jul 2001
By A Customer
This is a truly superb recital. The beauty of Bonney's singing is stunning. She shapes each performance with immense sensitivity to text, and delivers those texts with unrivalled clarity. The accompaniments (by leaders in the early music field) are superb; I particularly admired the contributions of the viol consort, Phantasm, though Heringman and Hogwood et al. are also in splendid form. Definitely not to be missed.
