Synopsis
EASTERN CONDORS is director Sammo Hung's high-energy version of THE DIRTY DOZEN. To win their freedom, a group of hardened Asian convicts agree to go on a suicidal mission to Vietnam and destroy an abandoned ammunitions dump before the Vietcong discovers it. Along the way, the men run into a trio of female freedom fighters and a freewheeling martial artist named Rat, played by Hung's Peking Opera "brother," Yuen Biao. The film borrows liberally from other Vietnam war movies (the Russian roulette scene from THE DEER HUNTER, for instance), but there are plenty of imaginative turns, including an instance when Hung uses leaves as deadly projectiles. As is typical in Hung's films, the action choreography is fluid and energetic. Hung's wife, Joyce Godenzi, plays one of the Cambodian guerrillas, Oscar-winner Haing S. Ngor (THE KILLING FIELDS) appears as a mentally deranged peasant, and Yuen Wah (Hung's and Biao's other stage brother) gives a quirky performance as the relentless commander of the Vietcong forces.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magnificent Seven Hong Kong style, 16 Jan 2002
By A Customer
The premise of this film is pretty simple. The american authorities need to go back to vietnam to recover or destroy a secret arsnel that they left in the the vietnemise jungles after the war. They do not send in american troops instead they get the chinese army leaders to create a crack squad of chinese prisoners to go and do this.

After the mission is cancelled, they are stuck in the vietnam jungle with only one thing to do, complete the misson and risk not getting extracted when it is over.

So they go and join the cambodian rebels, led by Angela Mao. They go and try to find the underground base.

They soon pick up Yuen Biao's character, who is a trader on the blaak market and gets the people of the towns almost anything they want.

Now the troupe is complete, they go on and find the base.

I will not spoil the suprises that are along the way, but i will just say it has an explosive ending.

The fight scenes all through the film are first class, as you would expect from a Sammo Hung film. The stunts are also very good, especially where Sammo jumps off a high cliff onto the back of a army truck.

The fights are very brutal, which i found different from many Sammo films (watch out for when Sammo gets out his machete...) as it is quite bloody in places.

All in all, a very good film that many people will enjoy. If you are not particulary into Hong Kong films, then this could be a good starting point, although this may be a bit on the more violent side for some people.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sammo's Greatest Ever, 5 May 2009
After seeing this film reviewed on amazon and being a South East Asian fan I just had to order it...and was I impressed.

I got the HK Legends print which was digitally restored and remastered giving an excellent picture (having a fairly old tv, dvds still have a grainy look to them). I won't go into detail on the plot as my fellow reviewers have given the basic outline of the plot already.

The characters progress really well, we all know they are bad guys who have done bad things in their past, but from the moment they are dropped into the jungle, we can't help but sympathize with them as fear overwhelms them and loss takes it's toll.

The film boasts impressive action and choreography, and the fighting looks believably brutal (after watching 1 of the interviews i found they were hitting for real to give realistic looks to the fighting) and the always impressive yuen biao shows off his gymnastic skills to the full.

The only other thing i can comment on are the locations. The film has some of the most spectacular scenery i have ever seen (the bridge and closing sequence spring to mind). The movie was filmed in the phillipines and not vietnam for obvious reasons.

All in all, Eastern Condors is an impressive martial arts movie, and i urge any martial arts fan to add this to their collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars BETTER THAN DIRTY DOZEN BY A DOZEN MILES, 15 Oct 2001
By A Customer
This is my fav. Sammo film. It is a serious but great war story which is different from dud kung fu films from the 70's. It had about 5 fights with Sammo and Yuen Bio both Jackie chan friends. The end fight with sammo and yeun fighting baddies together is brilliant. This film features Gun Shooting, Swordplay and of course Kung Fu. This is a better Sammo film to get instead of Magnificent Butcher (Which is a bit dull but still good)

GRAEME NOBLE
