THE definative death match game, 28 Feb 2001
By A Customer
When it comes to online games, I've always been more of a team game player. I've tended to go for the reality based games like counter-strike and it's ilk, but in Unreal Tournament I found a game that is great fun in all of it's guises. I can safely say that it is truly one of the greatest games ever created. Forget Quake III, it's ugly, clunky, completely lacking in character, and all in all, a disapointing waste of a fantastic engine. The Unreal engine wins hands down on all those fronts. It is a visual treat (especially on a newer computer, where you will see much more detail than previous generations of CPU's and 3D cards tended to allow) with an easy to use, intuitive, and unobtrusive interface, and if you're looking for character... this game has it by the bucket loads. The engine may be slightly less advanced than the Quake III engine (for now - but they are always updating it) but not by much. Besides, it's simply the tool by which some of the best designed game maps in the known universe have been compiled. Every map has been thought through properly, with careful thought being put into the style of setting, creating a playable layout, and making the level as much of a death trap as possible. This game has gone for beauty of design rather than ugliness to create a believable setting. Obviously a game created by people who understood what gamers want; Fast hardcore killing. And plenty of it. another beauty of this game is the high quality of the maps and mods (modifications to the game) that are available on the internet. Because the game attracted a certain style of mapper, and designer, there are many near proffesional quality maps and mods available (and at planetunreal.com one of the original designers will rate the best of them) and a not inconsiderable number of proffesional quality ones around at that either. These should probably keep you happy until the cows come home, or at least the follow up to Unreal Tournament arrives. All in all, playing this game is almost like watching a deadly ballet.
