Amazon.co.uk Review
Every now and then, certain genres of computer game make a comeback and we all nod and remember the good old days.

Dynasty Warriors 2 brings back the halcyon days of the sideways scrolling beat 'em up, updated for the new millennium and with spiffy new 3-D-graphics, but at heart it's the same bloodthirsty gorefest we all knew and loved on the eight-bit consoles.

It has to be said from the off that this is a one-track game. The basic premise is that the player, taking on the guise of one of a number of feudal Japanese warlords, must lead an army of brave warriors into battle, dicing with the opposition as they go. The armies are staffed with the usual collection of cannon fodder with a variety of captains and other senior leaders thrown in for good measure.

There's a vain attempt at introducing strategy into the mix by allowing the player to stop the action and peruse a battlefield map to see how just far their forces have advanced, but in truth the player's army are a bit lily-livered and seem to leave all the fighting to the boss.

Graphics are very high quality and as your chosen warlord spins and charges into the fray there's a real sensation of the high splendour of ancient Japanese warfare, but what leaves the experience a little flat is the distinct lack of moves which can be executed with the supplied battle sword.

Aside from a couple of aerial moves there are really only half a dozen hacks and slashes which may be applied to the soft flesh of the opposition, removing some of the potential enjoyment factor and the death sequences are beaten foes are a little too sanitised for most with the vanquished foe spinning around, screaming then fading out into the background.

That said, peel aside the superfluous layers and Dynasty Warriors is an excellent beat 'em up which combines all the best bits of the days of yore with the best console technology of the 21st century.

Gameplay is fluid and the addition of power-ups--collected after beating senior opponents or breaking open crates with your weapon--allow for quick saves, energy boosts and more, all serving to make this an enjoyable, if not very short-lived experience. --James Gordon

Manufacturer's Description
Third century China is a daunting and dangerous place, where combat is a way of life and survival a slim possibility. Feuding dynasties command armies of thousands as battles are fought to overthrow generals and bring down fortresses. An epic drama with a varied cast, Dynasty Warriors 2 immerses the player into a rich and riveting 3D environment. Aided by a wealth of jaw-dropping moves, your character can scale battlements, ride war-horses and pick off distant opponents with an accurate and deadly shower of bows and arrows. There are 9 main characters to select from and a variety of 3D viewpoints, including 1st person mode for an unrivalled perspective when launching your attack on the advancing army. Two different games styles--Musou Mode and Free Play--are featured, both strikingly rendered in 3D. Blending out-and-out fighting with an awe-inspiring backdrop, Dynasty Warriors 2 offers a captivating insight into the brutal reality of ancient China.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great fun at first, but quickly becomes repetitive, 23 Feb 2002
By Karura (Kent) - See all my reviews

Here is a game that lets you hack and slash to your heart's desire, and doesn't waste time letting you do so. You'll take on the role of a warrior of one of the Three Kingdoms of China, and can either play through a story mode in which you help your kingdom in its rise to power through a series of five battles, or free mode, in which can you can select any unlocked level and play as a one-off.
Each character has their own weapon and (rather limited) set of moves which can be chained together to perform (hopefully) lengthy combos. To spice things up a little, players also have the option of dispatching enemies from afar with bow and arrow, or attacking and trampling enemies from atop a horse. The latter is not as satisfying as it might sound, as not only is it difficult to get in any accurate blows from horseback, but there is a tendency to get knocked off easily. Each character also has their own Musou, or special attack, which is activated by taking damage or defeating enemies. Using your special attack renders you temporarily untouchable, and lets you really take it out on the enemy side.
Although the game is all about killing as many people as quickly as possible, there is an element of strategy to it. Throughout the battle, you'll receive tactical messages; on the basis of these you'll have to decide whether to forge on alone into enemy territory or hang back and help a beleaguered ally. It's game over if the commander of your army is killed, so it pays to keep an eye on the whole story and not just your own situation.
Each character also comes with their own bodyguards; these start off very weak, but increase in strength and number until they are almost a small unit of their own. Although this is useful for those times when you want to get up close and personal with large groups of enemies, you may soon find that your bodyguards are doing all the work, leaving you with no one to kill!
The game graphics are also worth a mention due to their impressive quality, especially notable are the way sparks fly as weapons clash (even though, oddly enough, blood is never seen). The in-game music has the odd twist of tending towards heavy metal and rock themes, which is hardly what you'd expect in Ancient China, but the music is at worst forgettable and sometimes even half-decent.
The fact that there are 1000 combatants per stage and 30 onscreen at any time sounds very impressive, but it should also be noted that extensive draw-in and fogging is used to keep the frame rate up. This means that in open spaces it's not always clear how many people are attacking you, and certainly can hinder you from spotting any distant archers who might be firing at you.
There are a limited amount of levels, and apart from any story sequences, these levels show little variety (defeat enemy army, kill enemy commander is order of the day in all cases). In addition, the majority of the characters fall into one of two groups the "sword" guys and the "spear" guys. It seems a little pointless to me to play through the game five or six times with almost identical characters just to unlock yet another sword-wielding Chinese general.
Dynasty Warriors 2 is nothing if not an enjoyable hack and slash, but because of the various flaws discussed above, its replay value is low. If you want a quick fix and a great way to release your frustration, get this game now. Otherwise, save your money and get Dynasty Warriors 3, as this promises to be a great game which solves at least some of the problems of its predecessor.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple & Fun, 30 Jan 2002
By A Customer
It must be said that this game is not for everyone. But for me this is one of the most fun games that there is available for PS2.
You should check your brain in before starting this game, this is not the game for in depth strategy. It's very simplicity is what makes the game instantly enjoyable. After 5 minutes you pretty much know what you are doing and the gameplay is so addictive that you will play for hours without realising it.
It is very well presented and although I can see it getting repetitive for some, there are reasons for picking it up again even after completing the game.
This probably the most fun you can have for under ... This is a must buy.
