Punch punch Kick Kick Throw Counter Block Kick....., 18 Mar 2002
DOA2 is a really great game- and this is from someone who used to think beat-em-ups were for brainless people. The great thing about DOA2 is that it is so darned playable. Unlike Tekken Tag Tournament, you don't have to spend 6 months learning how to pull off the moves- there's a button for punch, one for kick, one to throw, another to block and just two to perform a counter hold. Tag throws allow awesome moves, and are easy to pull off as well. This means that the game is much more about timing and choice of attack, rather than rote learning of button combos. There are a fair number of combos to be learned- but they are very easy to pick up and intuitive to perform. One of the best features, which TTT lacks, is the ability to knock your opponent off high buildings or into environmental hazards. Character will also slip when standing in water or snow. Another advantage over TTT is the sheer speed of the characters. After playing DOA2, TTT characters positively look as though they're on valium or something... There are various different game modes- in one-player there is the Story mode (don't expect a particularly deep plot though), a Survival mode, and Time attack mode. Multiplayer modes allow Tag-teams and Team battles (consecutive characters). Clearly the multiplayer modes are the most fun, as there's much more satisfaction to be gained from beating a real person next to you than the computer. You can record your battles and the game maintains fight statistics automatically. Graphics-wise, the characters are pretty well done, although not really photo-realistic. However, the girls are all very sexy (and have rather bouncy chests!)and you can unlock up to 8 skimpy costumes each. There's a CG gallery upon completion and the wind tends to blow their skirts up too .... A weak point of DOA2 is the rather limited number of characters (12), and locations (20). The locations are varied in quality- some are well drawn, others are decidedly boring. However, all in all DOA2 is a great PS2 title, and now that it's on Platinum, it's even more of a good deal- buy it now!
