5.0 out of 5 stars An Unforgettable Experience, 20 Jul 2007
By Sheila M. Walker (Merseyside, U.K.) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I received this disc this morning and could not wait to hear it. I was not to be disappointed as it was truly magnificent. A real feast of the very best of choral singing. You could not fail to be moved by every aspect of this disc. The diction of the singing was superb, the organ sounded marvellous and all the hymns were sung at a pace we can all sing-along too - the organ did not drown out the voices - a stunning performance. I have ordered all 5 Volumes and hope that there will be a 6th volume (hopefully including Summer Suns are Glowing)!

5.0 out of 5 stars Tremendous, 6 Oct 2009
Having grown up singing all these hymns as a choirister and choirman I can safely say that Victorian church music runs in my blood. As such I can heartily recommend this CD. Every item is a gem of hymn writing and tune composition from that most fruitful of worship periods.

If, like me, you deplore much of the 'modern' music (music?) that is forced on us in the majority of churches and long to exercise your vocal chords on fine hymns worth singing and offering to God this CD will not disappoint. Fortunately I have recently discovered a local Anglican church that not only uses The New English Hymnal, it also has BCP Matins every Sunday and choral one a month. So some of these hymns are still sung and enjoyed today.

For the purists - Dykes' "Strength and Stay" has retained its original harmonies, not the less chromatic ones in Hymns A and M Revised.

Happy singing!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Hymn CD, 1 Feb 2009
By Mrs. D. Baxter "Dorbax" (Scotland, UK.) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is a lovely calming CD to listen to - most of the hymns on it are traditional and well known, but it is not one for those who prefer the modern hymns.
