Synopsis
In this infamous film version of the popular French comic strip by Jean-Claude Forest, Jane Fonda plays the sexy yet innocent space-age heroine of the year 40,000 A.D. who never gets herself into a situation that requires too much clothing. BARBARELLA opens with the titular heroine stripping down to nothing in zero gravity among strategically placed credits. From there Barbarella embarks on a mission to find a peace-threatening young scientist named Duran Duran (Milo O'Shea) by order of the president of Earth. En route, she's attacked by killer dolls, is strapped into a contraption known as the Excessive Machine, and falls in love with a blind angel. Remaining true to its comic book origins, Barbarella's adventure unfolds in a series of dramatic difficulties and unlikely solutions, making for a galloping pace and never-ending opportunities for Mario Garbuglia's hallucinatory set design to dazzle. With guest appearances by 1960s icons Anita Pallenberg, Marcel Marceau, and David Hemmings and featuring dialogue by novelist Terry Southern, among others, BARBARELLA is not only a comic sci-fi sex romp but also a sly tongue-in-cheek portrait of the morality and debauchery of that era. And interestingly enough, Fonda was married to director Roger Vadim at the time of production.

4.0 out of 5 stars My favourite ever movie line, 26 Feb 2003
By James Booth (Chelmsford, ESSEX United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
this is a very bizarre, camp film which I love for all it's fantastic sixties weirdness. Brilliant soundtrack also. But the real reason this film stands out is that it contains my favourite ever line in cinema history; "Decrucify the angel! Decrucify him...or I'll melt your face!"

Oh, and there's a really good bit where Barbarella breaks an orgasm machine because it can't keep up with her...

5.0 out of 5 stars Camp as a scout jamboree!, 12 Jan 2004

(REAL NAME)
It had been a few years since I watched "Barbarella", and watching it again for a second time recently was joy, like discovering its kitsch joys for the first time all over again!

There's no point dwelling on the plot, because it's as thin and transparent as most of Jane Fonda's outfits! This is pure high camp comedy, wonderfully played up a superb cast. Some wonderful characters, brilliant one liners, and some of the oddest sets and costumes ever seen on film. Highly unenjoyable and would be instantly forgettable were it not for Jane Fonda excelling as our heroine and also for introducing the name "Duran Duran" to the world!

5.0 out of 5 stars Queen of the Galaxy, 15 Dec 2004
By bernie "xyzzy" (Arlington, Texas) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
I first saw this movie in a small theater outside West Point, NY in 1968. I remember the theater as it had moths on top of the popcorn in the dispensing machine. The movie was innovative for the time. And one of the characters is Duran Duran the inspiration for the band by the same name.

In the 41st-century astronaut Barbarella (Jane Fonda) receives a message from the President of Earth (Claude Dauphin) and is tasked with a mission to track down a threat to the earth, the scientist Duran Duran (Milo O'Shea,) inventor of the "positronic ray." On her quest she must go through many trials and tribulations. We get to experience them vicariously. Put your tongue back in.

Will she find Duran Duran before it is too late?

When Jane looks back on her extensive career this will be her crowning performance. She never really re-captured that Barbarella spark.

I think that Barbarella inspired the opening scene of "My Stepmother is an Alien."
