Amazon.co.uk Review
Monteverdi's L'Incoronazione di Poppea (1642) marks one of the very foundations of opera. Revolving around real historical characters, the Roman emperor Nero, his love for Poppea, the betrayal of the empress Octavia, and death of the philosopher Seneca, Monteverdi pits human love, ambition and intrigue against the fates. The set, a symbolic part-globe, and the costumes drawn from various ages suggest--very much in the way of the surreal film of Shakespeare's Titus (1999)--that the concerns of ancient Rome are timeless. With the emphasis on the text (the music alone does not hold the attention for 150 minutes) conductor Jacobs depends upon an excellent cast to bring the production alive. Patricia Schumann dominates the stage, her Poppea is warm, sensual and likeable, without being entirely trustworthy, an effective counterpart to Richard Croft's Nero. Darla Brooks brings just the right degree of vivacious gullibility to Drusilla, while Curtis Ryam offers eccentric comedy as Arnalta. As Ottone Jeffrey Gall is a man acutely tormented by love. Recorded at the 1993 Schwetzinger Festspiele, there is no sign of an audience, the many close-ups suggesting this performance was specially given for video.

On the DVD: There are subtitle options for English, French and German, but no special features. The booklet is well documented but does not contain the libretto. The sound is good PCM stereo while the 4:3 image (not 16:9 as stated on the packaging) is better than video but otherwise unremarkable. --Gary S. Dalkin

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful production of intimate opera, 30 Mar 2001
By A Customer
If you are a fan of early opera you won't be disappointed by this DVD. The production comes from the 1993 Schwetzinger Festival and is a wonderful example of a performance which makes the most of the initimacy of the music as well as the sensuality of the story. The set is quite simple, a curved stage with divided screens at the rear to facilitate entrances. Colours are kept to a minimum, mostly black, but strikiing colours for the 'heroine'. All the singers excell themselves, especially the main protangonists, Patricia Schumann and Richard Croft. I'm not sure that I entirely agree with all the castings of male/female roles swapped about, but generally speaking they work quite well. Musically, Rene Jacobs' vesion of the score maintains the intimate scale of the opera, which comes over even more because there is no audience noise whatsoever in the entire performance. This is truly different, although for those who don't know the piece it can be confusing not knowing when each act begins and ends. The video direction is simple, 2 or 3 camera angles only, mostly straight long shots with a few closeups for effect. This works well to emphasise the initmacy of the work. There are one or two gripes; The cast list on the back cover and in the beginning of the synopsis don't list Ottone at all. Luckily poor Jeffery Gall does get a short biography inside. The synopsis itself does not relate to the production itself. One example is the prologue, which is not included in the production at all, but appears in the synopsis. Similarily Valletto and Damigella's scene in Act 2 is not included. Finally there are a couple of typographical errors in the subtitles. Don't let those mistakes put you off, this is a real treasure, especially if you have never come across this opera before.
