Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

It's sad to think that in a lot of ways Elvis' larger than life persona (and waistline) came to overshadow his enormous talent. Since his debut in 1956 he has progressed from musical revolutionary to King of Rock 'n' Roll to the de rigueur ironic tee shirt icon... He is now celebrated more for the infamous excesses and spectacularly bad wardrobe of his latter years than for his extraordinary talent and presence and, most important of all, for the fact that he was the man that started it all. Young pretenders to the crown of greatest musical artist of the century, The Beatles, freely acknowledge their debt to him, and this Greatest Hits compilation shows just why. How many other artists can release a compilation of 50 genuine hits... songs that have become familiar to today's music-buying public mainly through film soundtracks and countless cover versions. From his electrifying breakthrough hit "Heartbreak Hotel" through simple ballads such as "Love Me Tender" and "Can't Help Falling In Love" to the cult classics "Viva Las Vegas" and "Suspicious Minds", this collection has pretty much every song that any Elvis novice would want. Also notable is the inclusion of "Wooden Heart", the tragicomic thigh-slapping masterpiece, which has the distinction of having Elvis singing half of it in German...unmissable. From the ridiculous to the sublime--no Elvis compilation is complete without the beautiful "In The Ghetto" and "Always On My Mind". As long as his music continues to inspire and entertain new generations of listeners.... Elvis lives! --Joasia Durko

5.0 out of 5 stars "Excellent C.D for any Elvis fan.", 10 Jan 2001
By A Customer
I think this CD is a well balanced selection of Elvis's songs. The 50 selected songs are a great and varied array of the wonderful range of Elvis's supberb and inimitable voice. From the electrifying "Jailhouse Rock" to the to the raunchy "One Night With You", to the gentle "Love Me Tender" and the moving "In The Ghetto," and the passionate and vibrant "It's Now Or Never" and the poignant "Are You Lonesome Tonight," this marvelous C.D. truly shows the magnificient range of his wonderful voice. A MUST for ALL Elvis fans, and such an unbelievable price for a double Elvis C.D. The quality of the sound is of the highest calibre. I really love this C.D. It is a joy to listen to. Christina.

5.0 out of 5 stars The King, 26 May 2002
By A Customer
A mere 50 of the King's greatest hits, from the early Sun masterpieces that are "Mystery Train" and "That's Alright Mama" to the biggest hits from the movies, early RCA, the 69 memphis sessions and Jungle Room Sessions of 76.

Still, almost 50 years after recording his first song, nobody has had more hits or #1s, especially with such great music, consistantly from the first to the last.

There are too many legendary songs here to mention, Heartbreak Hotel, Suspicious Minds, Always On My Mind and Hound Dog; which is still, except for Candle in The Wind, is the biggest ever selling single in America with almost 5 million sold there alone.

This is such a great album and the best place to start for those new to Elvis (is there anyone new to Elvis anymore!) It has a wide selection of tracks that is truly representative of his output and fairly decent packaging. His voice shines through on every track and you can see how his style developed as the album progresses. This is great listening, pure and simple!
