2.0 out of 5 stars A recording for Bruckner completists only?, 11 Jan 2007
I can't believe the normally reliable Penguin Guide gave this recording three stars! Despite some good playing by the wind and brass (hence the two stars) the choir really let this recording down. Intonation is frequently poor, especially from the sopranos; diction is often sloppy too, most glaringly at the climax of the Kyrie. German Latin is used throughout (not necessarily a bad thing, perhaps) and they also omit the plainsong at the start of the Gloria and Credo. I half-wondered if this is a live recording, as the choir seems to tire in the later movements. The best thing I can say about it is that the lines are very clear, especially tenors and basses.

The fillers, an early Mass in C Major and two short songs in German, are real rarities so if you're a Bruckner completist you will probably want to buy this CD. Ludmila Kuznetsova's interpretation is heavily Slavic and I can't help thinking how wonderful these rare pieces would sound in a more sympathetic and idiomatic interpretation.

Normally you can rely on Chandos for good recordings, but I guess this one must be the exception that proves the rule.
