Amazon.co.uk Review
The Battle of Britain: The Official History presents three near hour-long documentaries charting not just the course of the legendary air battle but also the events surrounding that conflict. "The Fall of France" sets the scene from the beginning of the Second World War. As the story of the bombing of Rotterdam and the betrayal of Norway and France is documented the tone becomes one of conscionable moral outrage. "Britain Stands Alone" tells of the Battle of Britain proper, when the Royal Air Force successfully defended the coast of Southern England against the numerically overwhelming forces of the Luftwaffe, preventing any possible German invasion. "Their Finest Hour" recounts the Blitz, the massive Luftwaffe aerial bombing of British cities, especially London and Coventry, through the winter of 1940 to May 1941. Using excellent archive footage and including several historic broadcasts and speeches by Winston Churchill, this is horrifying, moving, yet uplifting filmmaking. Chronicling the true heroism of the RAF and the British people, this is the reality behind the 1969 feature film of the same title.

On the DVD: There are short documentaries on the Spitfire, Hurricane and Messerschmitt BF109. A profile of Douglas Bader, which is also featured as part of the same producers' The History of the Royal Airforce, and a nine-minute film on the German fighter ace Adolph Galland. There is also a very brief glimpse of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. These extras total around 26 minutes, not the hour stated on the packaging. Almost entirely black and white, the set is presented in surround sound. --Gary S Dalkin

DVD Description
France had fallen. Britain, its children evacuated to safety, its armies defeated in Dunkirk, stood alone. The only defence the country had against Hitler's Luftwaffe was a handful of brave young men and the fledging RAF Fighter Command.

Against overwhelming odds, the resilient RAF fought and won a battle which changed the course of history.

3.0 out of 5 stars Excellent film, melodramatic narration., 8 Jul 2001
By A Customer
A three part documentary split over two DVDs. This is an entertaining and visually excellent history of the events leading up to the battle, the Battle of Britain itself and the Blitz. The footage, although occasionally repetitive, is excellent and gives the viewer a good feel for the battle. The use of Churchill's post war spoken memoirs is illuminating and adds depth to the study.

However, the bias and melodramatic narration undermines the credibility of this documentary and spoils it at times: this is not the balanced view of battle normally expected from a modern and 'official' history. This is consequently the history according to the victor and any viewer with a knowledge of the Battle will find the belittling of the Luftwaffe somewhat disappointing.

In summary, this DVD will appeal to those who lived through the Battle of Britain and those who want to know more about a great battle. However, the military history buffs out there will be disappointed with the narrow account from the narrator.

3.0 out of 5 stars Rather Disappointing Documentary of Make-or-Break Battle, 20 Dec 2003
By Neil Davie (Pontcharra, France) - See all my reviews

You'd have thought with "The Battle of Britain" as a subject, it couldn't but be a riveting account, and in a sense it is.The archive footage is always watchable, and the main events of the battle are recounted with clarity. However, if you are looking for a detailed and/or subtle analysis of events leading up to the battle, and of the battle itself, look elsewhere. This documentary doesn't come close, for example, to the "World at War" episode on the same subject. The DVD "extras" are disappointing too. An opportunity missed.
