A 12th Number One For 'Sporty' ? I Think So..., 12 Nov 2000
By A Customer
The 5th single taken from the fantastic Northern Star album; 'If That Were Me' is another fine example of how Melanie C can use her amazing voice. After drifting into R&B, dance and rock on earlier singles, Mel's latest release is a ballad. This deep and meaningful effort sends the listener's emotions into overdrive as it deals with the plight of homelesness. You cannot help but empathise with some of the lyrics. An example: '...I could not live without my phone. But you don't even have a home...' Amazingly well written, and excellently performed by one of the world's most talented artists. Not only has she had nine number-one hits with the Spice Girls, but 'Sporty Spice' has reached the top with two of her very own solo releases. Quietly, Mel C has worked her way up to match her idol, the legendary Madonna in the number-one stakes! So it is no surprise that Melanie C is now regarded as one of the world's best solo artists. It would take a very brave person to bet against 'If That Were Me' following suit to make it Mel's twelfth number one. As good as it is, this single is not the best ballad on the album; that award would have to be taken by the album's title track, last year's number four hit 'Northern Star'. But 'If That Were Me' makes for a very good second place! I strongly recommend this single to you. No, I am telling you. BUY IT! It will not disappoint!
