The diminutive lead singer of M People has released a solo album that reflects her personal odyssey, growing from shy teenager to becoming a single mother. Her self-assessment, that this collection of songs is "knowing but not self-pitying", is pretty accurate. Co-written with producers Pete Vettese and Simon Climie, they mine a philosophy of love, faith and survival. All wrapped up in radio-friendly gospel pop, complete with big choruses, generous harmonies and Small's strangely operatic voice, it is like 12 versions of "Search For The Hero Inside Yourself". In places the mix is strained and overwrought, with clicheacute;d lines like: "we can't hold back the hands of time". But elsewhere, her delivery is softer and more focused, resulting in the Stevie Wonder-ish "Don't Look For Love", and the compelling ballad "Don't Change A Thing". --Lucy O'Brien
