Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

At the time of Coast To Coast's release, Westlife could do no wrong. With a staggering record of every one of their seven singles hitting the top spot of the British charts, they were really at the peak of their game. Within a week of this, their second album's release, their cultural forefathers Boyzone announced it was game over, leaving their most successful member Ronan Keating balancing his solo career and his job as Westlife's manager, aided and abetted by Louis Walsh, the man who made Boyzone and who was now firmly focused on his five new Irish wonder boys,. Together they have come up with a winning formula--good looks, ballads and gentle pop--and they rigidly stick to it. After all if it ain't broke don't fix it--look what happened to the Spice Girls, swept aside thanks to a combination of a radical change of direction combined with Westlife power. As such, the album itself is hardly a challenging affair, in fact the only things that really jump out and grab you are the aberration that was their duet with Mariah Carey on "Against All Odds" and their butchering of Abba's "I Have A Dream"--taking the lush harmonies of the original and turning them into the aural equivalent of wallpaper paste. However, it isn't all totally bland, there are moments where the harmonies shine through and the pop sensibilities come to the fore, such as "My Love", "When You're Looking Like That" and "Dreams Come True", in fact anything that is remotely up-tempo and a break from the relentless wishy washy nondescript ballads. This is the sound of Westlife at the peak of their career--the only trouble is, with their phenomenal track record and the wonderful fickleness of the British pop charts, the only way from here is down. --Helen Marquis

5.0 out of 5 stars It could only go one way...down. Luckily for us: it didn't!!, 1 Nov 2000
By A Customer
Okay, first of all - Westlife's first album went straight to number one, and why?? It's certainly not 'coz they have low quality songs! No matter how hard you might try, you DON'T get your first SIX singles straight into the UK hit list at no1 if you don't have good music!! And that's why they continue to make this kind of music. Like on their new CD (Coast to Coast), they've got equally awesome songs! Take for example 'My Love', it's an amazing ballad with an epic sound, which I believe is one of their best records yet! Two of their earlier no1 singles, 'I Have A Dream' and 'Against All Odds', are also featuring on this new album, Coast to Coast. What kinda surprised me a little about this album is that even though there's still a lot of ballads, Westlife has put in a lot of uptempo tracks aswell! Like 'I Lay My Love On You' and 'When You're Looking Like That', they're quite funky and not typical Westlife songs, but they've still got the quality. 'Angels wings' and 'You Make Me Feel' are also songs worth the listen. One thing that hasn't really changed since the last album is that Shane, Mark and Bryan are singing the lead vocals on many tracks. But now the other two members, Nicky and Kian, have also been brought in to the lead and makes the CD even better! For people who liked the last album, but thought it could use a little 'something'- THIS is the album you're looking for ...

5.0 out of 5 stars Another complete succsess from the five Irish lads!, 15 Sep 2001
By smagub@hotmail.com (Sunny Spain! Olé!) - See all my reviews
This album was at least TEN TIMES better than their previous chart-topping album! I can highly recomend it if you're a fan of these gorge boys, or a total pop fanatic! Unlike the first album, there are a few more upbeat songs, but they keep true to their beautiful voices with many heart touching ballads which gave them several more chart topping hits. (My Love, Tell Me What Makes A Man and When You're Looking Like That-also a brill single by the way!) With this album being so good, I can't wait for their third album to be realeased, (hopefully around Christmas 2001)!!!!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Luscious vocals, beautiful songs, 13 Mar 2001
By A Customer
This album is full of beautiful songs which show how the boys' voices have moved on from their excellent debut album. Shane Filan takes the lead on many of the songs with his gloriously silky vocals but Bryan McFadden and Mark Feehily more than earn their spurs. One song, 'You Make Me Feel', is reserved to showcase Nicky Byrne and Kian Egan - and they do it proud.

As many Westlife detractors will moan, this album is predominantly ballads, but the group perform them so harmoniously there are few other bands to rival them in this genre. Ballads are what they do best and it's why so many fans of all ages love them. But there are also several uptempo numbers on this album which show that Westlife can do rockier pop with the best of them.

I think the best tracks are 'What Makes A Man', 'I Lay My Love On You', 'Close' and the excellent hidden track 'Don't Get Me Wrong' (why was this lovely song hidden???) and, for my money, the only weak link is 'Against All Odds', which is totally spoiled by Mariah Carey's warbling vocal gymnastics.

It's clear that these five Irishmen can sing and I hope that they will one day release an acoustic/a cappella album and one that pulls together all the extra tracks that grace the foreign editions of their albums and singles. But 'Coast to Coast' is more than enough to be going on with...for now. Bring on the third album!
