Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

One of Handspring's two new Visors running with the faster 33MHz Motorol a Dragonball VZ processor, the Visor Platinum offers a competitive option to the Palm V series. Although it doesn't sport a colour display like its new sibling, the Visor Prism, the Platinum offers 16 shades of grey, outputting sharper graphics in games and applications. It also features 8 MB of memory like the Visor Deluxe, providing plenty of room for storing contacts, notes and e-mails.

But the Visor Platinum's selling point is its new processor, which performs faster than other Visors or Palm handhelds (Handspring claims an increase in speed of up to 50 percent). While we didn't put a radar gun to the Platinum, it certainly felt speedier than the Visor Deluxe--tapping on an application opened it almost instantaneously.

Using a USB cradle, our desktop synchronisations sped along nicely, usually completed in just a few seconds unless we were adding applications. Additionally, since the Platinum uses the Palm OS, most third-party programs written for Palm handhelds will work for the Platinum.

One difference between the Visor Platinum and the Palm V series that Handspring most likely won't boast about is its size. Where the sleek Palm V series sports a depth of only 0.4 inches, the Platinum retains the standard Visor form factor of 0.7 inches.

But when you've got the expandability that the Handspring's Springboard module slot offers--allowing you to add a digital camera, a cell phone, a Tiger Woods golf game, or an MP3 player--you don't need to quibble over slimness. Also, like other Visors, the Platinum features a built-in microphone (though you will need to add a module, such as a voice recorder or the phone module, to use it).

If you are already a Palm or Handspring user, there may not be enough about the Platinum to sway you to pick up this new product. But if you are looking for the cutting edge of handheld speed, the Platinum is ready and raring to go. --J. Curtis

Manufacturer's Description

Think fast

Really fast. Because the Visor Platinum is 50 per cent faster than the Visor Deluxe. Which means you can organise your life really, really quickly. What's more, playing games, accessing data and using everyday applications on your Visor Platinum is super speedy. And, with the Springboard expansion slot, you can instantly snap in a digital camera, wireless modem or even a phone.

For those who crave speed, power and performance

If you are one of those people who uses lots of RAM, keeps tons of records, plays games or uses apps that have high-performance requirements, the Visor Platinum has the very speed you need.

Reach peak performance

Now you can access all your data without the wait. And the greyscale graphics--with 16 shades of grey--are so crisp that every picture is as clear as day. What's more, since the Visor Platinum is based on the latest Palm OS, it's got new usability, security and navigation features, too.

It looks fast too

The Visor Platinum has a shiny new silver metallic colour so it looks as fast as it works.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast, Fun, Funky with Zen minimal Cool, 16 May 2001
By A Customer
I was originally looking for a cheapo laptop to use as a backup for my home PC but didn't fancy spending £800+ for something decent... I bought the Visor Platinum on impulse and have been well impressed. There is tons of free software to download and in a few hours I had e-mail and web browsing working with my Nokia 7110 cellphone...

It has an intuitive interface and the USB HotSync cradle works very well. I had trouble getting the supplied Handspring sync software to install and downloaded Palm Desktop 4.01 (Free!) instead... Once you stop thinking with a 'Windows mindset' the Visor makes complete sense - it's minimalistic screen means a reasonable battery life, the Graffiti text input works well and I now carry it everywhere; indispensable. Both the BBC and MSN have websites for PDAs and do what WAP promised to do.... Get MultiMail, gMovie, Teal Paint + Info, DocPrint, Acrobat Reader and PalmScape browser off the web, grab your ir cellphone and have fun!

5.0 out of 5 stars PalmV versus Platinum, 17 Dec 2000
By A Customer
I have two PDAs. Firstly I had a Psion 5mx, and later I changed to a PalmV. (The Psion was too big and good for me.) At the moment I use a Handspring Platinum. PalmV design is better, however Platinum isn't bad, either. Platinum is faster (It's very fast! I have tried Dreadling /FPS First Person Shoot game for PalmOS, which is like doom/.) There is a very important difference in DateBook (a built-in software). Platinum contains a very enhanced version of this. PalmV datebook is very poor and simple (but it's maybe suitable for you).
The location of the infrared light is different.
The PalmV operating system is refreshable with a special software download procedure (cost free). In Platinum, as far as I know, the memory type isn't flash, therefore this feature isn't applicable. Platinum is more expandable than PalmV, with the "springboard" module system, which is a very good feature! The synchronisation is very fast in Platinum, because it uses USB connection to the computer, which is faster than the serial connection (like PalmV). Not to mention the price! This product is very recommended for any PDA users. I have chosen this product, because this silver color was the only acceptable for me. :) This speed and memory was not important for me(although there is a very important difference between Platinum and other Palm and Visor models in this respect).

If you have any questions, ,...

5.0 out of 5 stars Another best-of-breed from Handspring, 16 Nov 2000
This has to be the best PDA available on the market today, providing a great balance between cost and performance. And for most people, the lack of colour is not a problem in the slightest. I'd rather have the longer battery life, myself.
