Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Whatever your opinion cash-hoovering marketing tactics of Lucas' films, there is little doubt that this "Ultimate Edition" of John Wiliams' fourth foray into that galaxy far, far away will be of certain interest to both rapacious Star Wars fans and aficionados of Williams' exquisite styling. A formidable two-disc set, with 68 tracks in chronological order over two hours, this score, like the film itself, lacks the iconic freshness of A New Hope (the first Star Wars film) and is hindered by forgivable self-plagiarism. However, it's undoubtedly an accomplished, enjoyable work, with Williams showcasing his strengths with impressive ease, and therefore easily worthy of the Star Wars brand. This is especially true with this meatier version, where Williams' new themes mingle comfortably and effectively with the first trilogy's classic motifs such as the Main Title fanfare and the Force theme. A wonderfully subtle example of his renowned technique for leitmotif is provided by the string-driven "Anakin's Theme" (End Credits) in which the sweepingly innocent chorus is given a forbidding coda with the briefest snatch of the "Imperial Theme" from The Empire Strikes Back. With its Wagnerian chorus, courtesy of a 180-strong choir chanting Sanskrit, "Duel of the Fates" remains the score's high-point, giving the film's climactic lightsabre duels the apocalyptic urgency they deserve. Elsewhere, Williams imbues "The Flag Parade" with some Ben Hur bombast, while "Escape From Naboo" is thrilling, adrenalised fare. Ending with a fun, dialogue version of "Duel of The Fates", this is an impressive and exhaustive collection, confirming that Williams' lush, vivid themes define Lucas' universe as much as the special effects. --Danny Graydon

4.0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Edition? - Not quite, 25 Nov 2000
By A Customer
John Williams is, by far, the greatest writer of film music and his music for the Phantom Menace was exceptional. This album gives us all of that music but after the release of 2CD soundtrack albums for Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return Of Jedi this one proved to be a little disapointing. There are no alternate versions, no suites and no liner notes. However,

5.0 out of 5 stars Ignore the nit-pickers, listen to the music..., 22 Nov 2000
By A Customer
There has been a lot of controversy regarding this release amongst the John Williams fan-base, complaining about the various edits and loops, and how we are not getting every little minutae of JW's original music. For me, although the edits are a little off-putting at times, an ideal score would be the music AS HEARD in the film - which is exactly what we get here. Now on to the actual music. What can I say - superb. A few of the new tracks are worthy of the asking price alone, for example 'Anakin Leaves Home', plus you can at last hear excerpts of Qui-Gon's theme and Shmi's theme - both worthy additions to the Star Wars canon. As a whole, the music is varied and filled with the pre-requisite elements of grandeur, mythos and excitement. If you consider yourself a fan of quality film scores, you should buy this immediately.
