Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
After their groundbreaking debut, brothers Paul and Phil Hartnoll quickly put trendy tags like "rave", "techno" and "hardcore" behind them. With Orbital 2, the brothers went to great lengths to show that some of their primary interests lay beyond the dance floor, as influences like Miles Davis and Steve Reich crept into the fragmented, floating arrangements. Atmospheric tracks such as "Lush 3-1" and its near relative "Lush 3-2" transcended established electronic formulas by breaking away from regular beat patterns, and they borrowed Opus III vocalist Kirsty to create the catchy, entrancing mesmerizer "Halcyon + On + On". Orbital had come a long way from their breakthrough single "Chime", and by all indications would never go back again. --Aidin Vaziri

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the two great Orbital albums, 2 Mar 2004
By robojam - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)
Orbital produced two great albums when they started their career, and although it has been up and down since then, this seems to be the album that everyone knows best.

Also known as 'The Brown Album', it continues where 'Orbital' left off, but the direction is probably a little more towards conventional techno, albeit with a much wider range of influence behind it. The rhythms aren't too conventional here, and it was the start of the break from pure dance music and a nod in the direction of experimental music.

'Lush 3-1' and 'Lush 3-2' are the standout tracks for me, but when you listen to this album, you don't really think about separate tracks too much, as the CD needs to be appreciated as a whole rather than concentrating on any of it's constituent tracks.

5.0 out of 5 stars yes...yes...YES!!!!, 11 Jun 2003
By Koala (Southampton, Hants United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
Wonderful! Beautiful! This is what Orbital are all about!

This is music that draws you right in. Where some of Orbital's later work makes you sit back and ponder it critically ("Hmm, it's quite good, but..."), this album just grabs hold of you!

Many of the tunes merge into each other, creating an ongoing tapestry of sound. It always feels totally organic, never self-conscious or calculated, and powerful yet soothing at the same time.

Admittedly there are some stupid samples near the start of the album. What were they thinking? : ( But just try to ignore that. It can be quite easily detached from the rest of the album. Snivilisation is a far better example of the intelligent use of samples.

This album is a treasure! No nonsense, just giving the people what they want! Great beats, great melodies, it's all good!

For anyone who's heard The Altogether but hasn't heard this yet, listen to this and you'll understand why the Altogether met such a lukewarm reception!

4.0 out of 5 stars It comes together on the second album for Orbital, 2 Nov 2003

Songs sound better structured than before and have a much more lasting affect on the listener.

'Lush 3-1' is one of the best songs on the album, but for the real highlight listen to 'Halcyon'. This is one of my favourite Orbital tracks. Starting off with a solo sample of Kirsty Hawkshaw, the song builds into one of those memorable songs you will be humming for days.

A great album.
